SURPRISE!!!

I've been busy working on version 3.0 of my home theater. I finally got "approval" to build a dedicated room, so all of my work last year gets to be redone. I just started drywalling last night, and tonight I hope to finish all of the ceilings, then on to the walls, and then the fun part... Mudding and taping!!!!

Vacations?

I'm getting ready for a week at the beach starting Mon., my guess is vacations also.

I for one, hope it stays quiet for the next few weeks. If I come back to 4 weeks worth of posts it'll take another 4 weeks just to catch up!

Yeah, it's been kinda slim pickins around here. Summer's here and everybody is busy doin' stuff.

I transfered to another department at work and now I have less time for the boards.... I knew it would be more work, so it'll be my own damn fault when the board withdrawal sets in.

Speaking of stuff we're all doing... my latest summer project is finally building a real workbench/cabinets in the garage workshop... since we moved in, there's been a ramshackle upper... uh "cabinet" (more on this later) and a piece of 18" deep countertop acting as a work table. First thing I hated about the garage... last thing I'm fixing.

So this afternoon was slow for work (coming up to the long weekend and all) so I started demolition and rebuilding the new cabinets. Demolition was... interesting... removed the pegboard from the walls carefully to reuse it (all that track-wall stuff be damned - pegs work and I have a ton of them already)... and as I removed one piece, the upper ramshackle cabinet fell until it hit some framing. Apparently I removed a load-bearing piece of pegboard.

Building the cabinets with 2x4 framing and 3/4" BCX ply (yes, I'm cheap and yes it's a garage) where it's hidden and sanded maple ply where it's visible.

Really racking my brain trying to come up with an inexpensive way of covering the countertops. I could do arborite... but it'd be 2 sheets to do them... which would be $200 or so if I remember correctly. Thought about just painting them like the cabinet faces, then urethaning the crap out of them... but again, that'd be expensive... thought about tiling them... but that's a bit labour intensive... anyone else got any ideas? I'm also considering hitting a cabinet place and see if they have any unusable countertops that I can cut down... see what I can find.

My guess would be tiling would be the most inexpensive soulution, another fairly cheap method would be to use laminate on them, I'm just not sure how labor intensive that is since I've never done it.

I'd vote for laminate or melamine or whatever the plastic sheet good du jour is.

I love tile, but I don't think it's practical for a workbench top since it would not be completely smooth for more than 18" or so. I suppose it depends on what you're working on. While most tile is very durable, it DOES chip and crack if you, say, drop a sledge on it. I'd personally rather have a dent than a chipped tile. However, tile is not flammable

What's the sheet good called that they make the pegboard out of? If you can get that without the holes, that might be another good option (over some ply, natch).

Masonite is the name I normally hear. Believe that is actually a specific manufacturer and not a generic name, but most people I know call the generic product Masonite in the same way that we still talk about "Xerox-ing" things on a Canon copier

I just noticed this thread is actually about lower attendence on the board recently, not pegboard.

I think we need some more ugly pi**ing contests on avsforum to get people talking about Axiom. I think I'll go over to avsforum and post something like "Axioms are so bright they killed my cat !!"
