Sorry if this is in the wring area or has been talked about before (I tried to use the search but got nothing on this topic)
I have owned the Epic 80 speakers for over a year and love them!! However, just this past month have been having problems with the center speaker. It crackles and buzzes very badly when in surround mode. I at first thought it may be my receiver (Sony ES series) and swapped it out for another one but got the same result. I also unscrewed one speaker and checked to make sure there was not any vibration with the face plate and the enclosure...all looked OK. I noticed the sound coming from all 5 speakers in the center unit but only at higher volumes. Could it be that I have blown the speaker...or could it be a crossover issue?
Any help and a possible fix would be appreciated!!
Thanks,
RPM

Have you tried temporarily hooking the speaker up to a different channel, like the left or right channel to see if you still hear the same sound with music? Have you checked your connections? You could unscrew each driver to make sure the wires are connected securily...just some ideas..

Great suggestion...
Just tried all you have said and still getting the buzzy sound. also all connections are good. I just can’t see how I could have blown the speakers...the receiver is not that powerful to have done that. Is there a crossover built into the center speaker? And if so do they ever "go out" ? As you can tell I'm new to all this..
Thanks again..

We don't have enough forums for you to post in the wrong area This sounds really odd -- it's pretty unlikely that you would "blow" all 5 drivers at the same time, but I can't think of anything in the crossover which would make this kind of noise. Another vote for swapping the speaker with a left or right main to see if the noise moves as well. BTW a low power receiver is more likely to blow drivers (at least more likely to blow tweeters) than a high power receiver because when you drive it near clipping the result is relatively more power in the high frequencies than low frequencies, and the tweeters were meant to handle a more normal power distribution (ie tons of power in the bass and less at higher frequencies). This doesn't sound like blown tweeters either though. Strongly suggest you give Axiom a call -- they have probably heard about 10 odd problems for every one we have heard. Their customer support folks keep pretty long hours and are real helpful.

Sorry for the wrong forum posting...Mods please feel free to move post to the Tech section (I just found several long threads on clipping in that section).
I have tried to switch speakers, made the center a left front and kept it in stereo ..same result.
I will call Axiom in the AM...

There is not wrong section here at the Axiom forums, not sure why you feel you posted incorrectly. Welcome by the way.

Yep, I was trying to say "don't worry" not "you posted in the wrong place".

>>I have tried to switch speakers, made the center a left front and kept it in stereo ..same result. Hold on, I don't think this is a valid test. If the problem with the center channel originally happened in surround mode, you want to stay in surround mode when you switch the speakers around. I realize there is a pretty good chance you *meant* surround mode not stereo mode, just checking

But even if "stereo" was meant, the apparent result was that the VP150 used as the left stereo speaker had the buzzing, etc., indicating that the problem was with the speaker, not the center channel.

Exactly John, that was my point. By moving the speaker to a different channel and playing any source material, if the problem was still occuring, that would rule out the center channel surround signal as the problem. Sounds like it is a speaker issue.
