Great choice, Darren! Of course, I'm a bit biased.

Hi darren700, Your system looks great, as does the image on the Samsung DLP. Just a tip here: In my experience, the Samsung DVD players, while they're OK, have somewhat mediocre video quality, including the upconverting models. A no-brainer alternative would be the OppoDigital 970, which you can get on-line for $149US. It has excellent playback quality whether through its component video outputs or via its HDMI upconversion, and it's a Universal player as well. I have no complaints about the SACD or DVD-Audio sound quality either. Check it out at www.oppodigital.com

Also be weary of the Oppo players from this generation. If I am not mistaken when using component out they only output 480i.

The Oppo 970 will output 480p over component outputs according the the spec (and full resolution on non-commercial DVDs).

Darren, keep in mind that since your 5087 is a 1080p set, it has to deinterlace an input that's "only" 1080i to 1080p. It shouldn't be assumed that a player or receiver that deinterlaces i to p would do a visibly better job of it than the 5087 itself would.

Faroudja I believe is the word you're looking for, and well received "for the most part" is a good comment. They have been known to create macroblocking issues with Samsung DLP's on ocassion.
However keep in mind that (as far as i know) your TV, while 1080p, does not have 1080p INPUT over component (unless this has changed) only the VGA port can accept 1080p. I could be wrong, perhaps the *87 series is different.
The Oppo players are highly regarded as well, and the new models should have no problem with 4801/480p.

It is!
• 2 HDMI inputs (High Definition Multimedia Interface) accepts 1080p format • 2-component video inputs (480i/480p/720p/1080i/1080p)
