It appears to me that Yamaha RX 1700 supports HDMI 1.2a, which, according to Hdmi official website is required to obtain lossless SACD audio. Denon 2800 is HDMI 1.1, which, again according to HDMI.org only adds lossless DVD-A capabilities. However, I can still use analogs for SACD, right? Sorry, but this whole thing makes me confused.

Try Jason Turk at AVscience (the guys who started AVS). He’s been great to deal with and you’ll be surprised at their prices for Denon, Marantz. Or, wait for the Sherwood Newcastle HDMI receivers coming out this fall. They look too good to be true, espesially at their MSRP.
Yamaha and Marantz are the only 1.2a receivers out.
Yes, 1.2a supports SACD, but unfortunately, there are NO SACD players that send the data stream as straight DSD (which is what 1.2a supports) over HDMI. They all convert it to PCM. In other words, no SACD players are taking advantage of HDMI 1.2a’s bandwidth capacities over 1.1. There are also very few receivers that except straight DSD from SACD's. Most convert it to PCM. The Marantz will. Not sure what else.
And yes, this is all very confusing, frustrating, and in short, completely unnecessary. Analogue was / is quite capable to carry everything that HDMI will.

Thanks Mike, I sent Jason a PM at AVSforum.
I had another look at JohnK's suggestion - Onkyo 604. It looks good, has hdmi 1.1 audio processing 90 wpc and also available in silver. I have forgotten to mention: I'd prefer silver receiver to match with my Rotels and TV. Why is it so cheap? am I missing something?

This might sound like a stupid question, but where do you guys buy your Denon's, Yamaha's and Marantz's? I run a search for online stores on a couple of receivers mentioned here, and the prices seem to be way lower than MSRP. To tell you the truth I am very tempted from the "smaller" brother of Mike's Marantz: the 7001, but also Denon 2807 looks very good.
I bought my factory refurbished Denon 2807 from Dakmart. If you go to the bottom of Denon’s home page there is a “Buy online” link that lists their authorized e-tailers. It took Dakmart a couple of weeks to get one in before they could ship it but it worked out well since I bought my Axioms from the factory outlet which also took a few weeks to ship.
Note I’m not trying to sell you on a 2807 it just seemed to be the best overall choice for me, given it’s power, input/outputs, and price. What sealed the deal for me was the Auto Set-Up and Room EQ by Audyssey. But definitely look around since you want this to last a few years before upgrading.

Just wanted to let you know that I placed my order today with Axiom: VP100, QS4s and FMS-QS stands. All from factory outlet. I was cheap, wasn't I? Please let me know if I made a mistake, I think there is still time to fix it. I have forgotten to mention that my living room is 13X12X8 feet with a huge opening to a dining room and to a sunroom. My Samsung DLP TV 720p is located in the corner of the room, with the diagonal distance of 10 feet from the sofa. Somebody at AVS suggested Denon 887 the important part is that does HDMI 1.1 audio and has preouts which lets me use my Rotel RB-1080 amp. Any experience with this receiver? It is much cheaper than 2807 as MSRP.

Good show, Skerdi, although as usual I'd suggest considering a vertical M2 or M22 center. On the receiver, note that it's the 987, not the 887, which is identical to the 2807. Also note that the 2807 doesn't come in silver, which you mentioned in an earlier post.

Enjoy the music, not the equipment.

Hey John, thank you so much, you're always of great help. In terms of Denons, I specifically meant 887 which does HDMI upconverting and audio (1.1) but it is significantly cheaper than 2807 (or 987). What's missing in 887 that I can't figure it out? Why is so much cheaper?

The 887 is the equivalent to the 2307Ci, where as the 997 is the equivalent to the 2807.
Here are Some of the differences between the 2807 and the 2307CI, that I picked up over on AVS. They're from two separate posts.
2807 has Audyssey MultEQ XT 2807 has 480i-480p conversion from analog to HDMI(I don't think the 2307CI has this, although I'm not a 100% sure) 2307CI has XM HD Surround, 2807 just has XM 2807 has more inputs 2807 has 110w x 7 amplification, the 2307CI has 100w x 7
1. Wattage - 2307 (100W), 2807 (110W) 2. THD Rating - 2307 (0.08 THD), 2807 (0.05 THD) 3. A/B speaker selection - 2307 (on panel), 2807 (on remote) 4. Audyssey Room Eq - 2307 (none), 2807 (6 position) 5. Optical I/O - 2307 (4/1), 2807 (5/2) 6. Analog audio inputs - 2307 (10), 2807 (11) 7. Fron A/V/Optical - 2307 (covered), 2807 (drop down door) 8. Composite Video I/O - 2307 (5/3), 2807 (7/3) 9. S-Video I/O - 2307 (5/3), 2807 (7/3) 10. Component I/O - 2307 (3/1), 2807 (3/2) 11. Stereo/Direct Modes w/Pure Analog Path - 2307 (none), 2807 (yes) 12. DSP modes - 2307 (7), 2807 (none) 13. AL24 Processing; Multi-zone preamp outputs, selectable output levels; Discrete multi-zone composite video - 2307 (none), 2807 (yes) 14. Remotes - 2307 (Y/RC-1043), 2807 (Y/RC-1030) 15. Weight lbs - 2307 (28.6), 2807 (29.75) 16. HDMI - 2307 (1080p upconversion), 2807 (480i->480p only??)
I'm sure there are some other differences, but at the very least, this ought to help you out a little bit.
