Hi all,
I have a regular ht setup a Sony receiver str-de645 and a Sony set of speakers. I’ve had them for a few years, and its time to upgrade. I just bought a Receiver from J&R Harman Kardon AVR 645 for $740. I am thinking about buying the Epic 80 350 Home Theater. The question I have; is the receiver I bought good enough for this particular set of speakers or should I have gotten something better for that price or a little more. Please help. Also if not the Epic 80 350 what should I get.

H/K receivers by reputation are up to the task of powering the M80s. They are very consertive with their power ratings, unlike other brands that try to make their numbers look like more than they really are.

I think you'll be fine. You should get a number of opinions on this soon. Enjoy the new setup- it's going to astound you coming from the Sony setup. I did the same thing a few years ago. It's simply amazing how good these speakers are in creating realistic, powerful sounds that are so real and life-like, you'll never want to watch a movie anywhere else.

Welcome to the board Dash!

You'll be perfectly fine running the 80s with the HK 645, I've ran our 80s with the H/K 635 we have and haven't had the slightest issue with the receiver...I've even had a couple of centers (VP100 & 150) wired in parallel for an impedance rating of 3.4 ohms and again didn't have any issues whatsoever with the 635.

Depending on your room size, have you considered the EP500 over the EP350?

I know BrotherBob used a H/K to power his M80s for a while and had no problems. I know another person that uses this receiver to power a M80 based setup.

You will be fine.

Never mind there he is

H/K + Axiom = beautiful.

I use that combo currently. VERY happy with it.

I have a 635 and M80's. I asked the same question when I first got mine. People said it'd be fine..and they were right.

Side question...if something was wrong with doing this, what would that sound like(the problem)?

Tony if for instance the H/K's amplifier couldn't power the 4 ohm 80s there wouldn't be a difference in sound but the receiver would start heating up and shut itself down in the auto protect mode....a problem I don't believe you'll have with this unit.

I've noticed my 635 runs warmer while idle than my Rotel amp does pushing power, has done it since day one and is a characteristic of the H/K receivers I believe.

Yeah, my HK doubles as a space heater when I watch a movie. It was almost unbearable in the summertime when I had it in a small room. Now I have a two channel amp hooked up to it which seems to alleviate some of the excess warmth.
