Hi all, so I sold my Klipsch RF83 (5 months old)and I am ordering my M80's today. Guess this name will have to be changed.
Can't wait to hear what they sound like powered by the EMO "big dogs". I love HT but I adore listening to music even more perhaps. I think the 80's are going to really shine for this(I hope).

I believe Amie or Andrea can change your name. I don't have the DMC-1, but my 80's sound great with my mps-1...

Hi Guys and Gals, thanks, i sure hope so. I'm just a bit worried after the problems I have had with the "highs" on the 83's.I have seen a few comments about these being bright but I don't think its like my 83's..I hope.

Very good, Chris; I'm sure that the M80s will give you great enjoyment. Yeah, until you change, I suppose that those who don't want to use your real name can refer to "the member formerly known as KlipschGuy".

After that, you can just change your nickname to a symbol of your choice.

You will be very pleased with the M80s but I will give you some warning. As a music lover, you may have to spend many, many hours experimenting to find the perfect position and toe-in for your M80s. I purchased mine a month ago and have spent 2 hours every night since then in search of acoustic heaven. Two nights ago, I hit on it and I can tell you that I can't stop listening to them. I have always heard audiophiles talking about speakers becoming invisible but I would have never believed it until I heard it myself. Be watching as I will eventually post pictures. Until then, don't be afraid to toe them in aggressively. This is the secret to enjoying great music. And you will also have to give your ears some time to adjust to the new sound after being eKlipsched for so long. Welcome to the way sound was meant to be heard!

Heh... I was testing the audio cable between my two rooms (yes, it's in!) this morning with a CD player in one room and the receiver in the other. I figured I'd use Sgt. Pepper to check the stereo (make sure I'd wired them the right way around). I was standing in between the M80s, and I realized I was not hearing the distinct stereo separation I was used to on that album. Instead, I was immersed in it. Wonderful!

Its something about those Axioms,

In more than one incident, after sitting a guest in the sweet spot, he was convinced the centre channel was on for music (2 channel).

I love my M22s (I suspect the M22s are easier to place than the M80s for a seamless soundstage). Good choice on the 80s, good to see that you have seen the light

That was actually the first thing I did when I hooked up my m22's - sat the wife down and asked her which speakers were on. Pointed at the center. I then had her get up and put her ear next to the speakers.

LOl, thanks everyone. I get them on Thursday hopefully. looking forward very much to tinkering with the 80's to find the "sweet spot", my room is almost accousticaly perfect, well as far as a DIY HT/Sound Studio can get without spending wads of cash anyway. I will post some pics when I get the 80's set up and some initial thoughts.

Hi Chris,

I for one can't wait for your description of their sound, especially compared to the REF 83s. I heard the REF82s and was not impressed with the mids or highs, great bass, but not much else. The REF 83s are $2 K more than the 82s and I was going to get the store to order a pair in for listening..but I think I won't bother with that.

Looking forward to your "review"..

Cheers,

Steph

Hey folks,I got my m80's and have had about 8 hours so far listening to music. First impressions is that the build quality is excellent. This is an early opinion but right off the bat these speakers are fantastic. The bass is extremely tight, punchy and tons and I mean tons of it! I cannot believe how such small drivers can be so effective in the bottom end. Having a big amp helps no doubt but its just magic to my ears. The mids are very detailed and smooth and the highs are perfect, I cannot imagine where some people say they are bright, its just not a valid statement especially after owning Klipsch 83's.
So far I am blown away with these speakers, i cannot believe how great they sound, the value is amazing. I paid twice as much for my 83's and these sound so much better in all areas , not even close. I thought the bass would be lacking in comparison to the 83's but if anything it goes deeper, is much tighter and just blends together perfectly.
I am impressed.

Chris,

I am so happy for you. I agree with you that the M80 bass is great but nothing compared to matching them with the EP600 . So start saving up. You didn't mention anything about imaging and sound-stage in your review. Like I said before, try to experiment with toe-in, separation and distance from the wall. Don't hesitate to toe them in aggressively as that may work out better for you. Once you find that perfect configuration, you may never be able to take your ears off of them!

That's too familiar. That's what I did with the M80's and she couldn't believe the imaging.

Hey all, in regards to imaging, I believe i have it pretty close, imaging is VERY good indeed. Funny thing is, it seems better with out much toe in, just my room I guess(dedicated HT, 20x12). The soundstage is excellent, wide and tall and some notes seem to come from behind the listening position, pretty cool. Keb Mo sounds so luxurious, velvet like sound. The wife sat there just smiling in the sweetspot listening to NJ..she loves them too. When the Grand piano kicks in on one song, its just crazy, you can feel the hammers strike the strings, wonderful stuff.

As far as the EP500 or 600 go, I prefer 2 channel without the sub, thats why i am so pleased with the 80's bass response. And for movies my PW2200 is not a year old and really kicks low and hard and is nice and tight for music tracks also.(not as good as the Axiom stuff I'm sure).
However, I have spent around $11000 in the last year adding a PJ and screen, seperates and so on and so forth so I may take a breather on more upgrades, I am pretty happy for now anyway.

Can't wait to listen to more stuff

Chris

It's great that you didn't have to spend too much time tweaking for the imaging. I have noticed that most Axiom users that have posted pictures don't toe in or toe in very slightly. I was wondering if that was because most use their systems for theatre rather than music. I found that I didn't have to toe in very much to get good separation and a nice sweet spot. But now with the toe-in, I have a huuuuge sweet spot. I can move my head two feet off-centre and not affect the image. I did have to move my speakers further apart to achieve this though. Enjoy your system.

Thanks MoJo,
My speaks are about 10' apart and 12' from the sweet spot, I shall try some massive toe in for giggles but am very pleased so far.

Could you provide some pics of just how much toe in you are using. My Axioms are in a music only system.

Here's a picture of my set-up. The M80s and my listening position form an 8 foot equilateral triangle. If I toe them in any further, the sweet area becomes a sweet spot. If I toe them out any further, I start losing my sound-stage. BTW, I'm not quite finished yet as I have a few loose wires to clean up. I'll be posting pictures of the whole room soon. The jack above the Samsung was supposed to be for another centre but I realize now that I don't need it. And yeah...that's my portable CD player because my Sony DVD player can no longer play audio CDs. That's my 4th Sony component that has failed in the last 6 years!

Toe-in is tricky and time-consuming to set up perfectly. There isn't a magic angle. It's dependent on your room (how far apart are the speakers), your listening position (how far back you sit), and how much free play you want for the 'sweet' spot/area.

In my experience, if you have one specific seat that you want to be *perfect*, you're going to use more toe-in: with the speakers almost pointing directly at you, or slightly behind you. That one spot will then be awesome, but you'll quickly lose the soundstage and depth effects as you move away from that spot. Less toe-in means the 'sweet' area becomes broader, but you get slightly less amazing soundstage and placement across the area.

The closer you sit to the speakers, the more difficult and picky your toe-in setup will be. I sit about 10 feet away from my M80's, and they're toed in about 15 degrees and that makes my whole couch a sweet spot.

That's exactly what I found and that's why it took me 60 some odd hours to set the M80s up. I have to sit close unfortunately as I have a post behind the couch. I'm not complaining though because the sound is incredible and I can live with a smaller monitor. Now I have to somehow nail the M80s down because if they move even a nanometer, the whole effect will collapse .

That is some pretty aggressive toe in. Mine is nowhere near what you have done. Never the less they do sound fantastic.

You have a really nice looking set up, very clean looking.

MoJo, thats a real nice looking setup you have there, well done! Does look a little close though but as long as it sounds good, woo hoo! Thats why it took so long to find the sweet spot I guess?
Congrats!
I will post pics of my HT soon, just pulled a couch out of the room that was blocking the left speaker with dramatic results in SQ. Watched the Doobies "live at Wolf Trap" last night at some pretty darn loud SPL's and it sounded fantastic. Video is 9.5/10 too if you are interested, damn near HD thru the Oppo upconvert, lovely!

I'm afraid I didn't have too much choice on the distance to the speakers. I have a post behind the couch. I could have gotten rid of the post but 1. it was mucho dollero, 2. it would have dropped my ceiling another 4" as the engineer said I'd have to put in a deeper cross-beam and 3. I need the space for a foosball table.

I just ordered the Oppo 970 from advice I received on another post. Which one do you have?

I have the 971H which was replaced by the 981. If you have HDMI then you want the 981 as the 970 does not upconvert. Thats where the 981 shines, its awesome .The 981 also does SACD and DVD Audio..wicked! is that a plasma you have? if so should work great. Some issues with the Oppos with DLP sets in regards to macroblocking.
