Just for fun, I took my regular M3's outside last weekend. I was really surprised at how easily and FAR sound travels. I'll have to really watch the volume.

Overall, they sounded great as always but as expected, without the room re-enforcement, there was a drop in the bass output. So.... much to my neighbours dismay, I opened my windows and had my way with the EP600's gain control. Lack of bass outside solved.

Oh, I love the ports. All kinds of ports. But when the need arises, I'm not opposed to fiddling with my knobs.

I'll be looking forward to a review as well...especially from someone who has regular M3s to compare.

I'm not sure how many have considered it, but if the outdoor speakers sound exactly like the originals, it opens up more "non-additional-cost" colors as available. I can see many buying the Arctic White for indoor use, and I know the "Almond Bisque" looks to be a close match for my AnthroCart edit rack furniture....

Oh - my Axiom Newsletter says "Pictured left, our new Algonquin Outdoor Speakers in Almond Bisque. The waterproof speakers, designed to the same specifications as our M3, began shipping last week. "

I missed that on the letter. I hope that I'm wrong, but I pre-ordered a pair on March 15th and haven't received a shipment notice yet. I must be way down on the list.

That was my bad . I formatted the newsletter before heading off on a trip and I was anticipa a a a a a ating that we would have shipped them. Sorry about that!

The poor staff has been very busy mixing the nuts and the cream - Almond Bisque is a clear winner in terms of color so far.

Got mine back in early May and absolutely love them. I ended up hanging them in my sunroom instead of outside.

I'm using an older HK receiver (55 wpc) with a Squeezebox as my main input source. I have them hanging from the ceiling horizontally.

Mark,

I don't have an indoor set of M3's but I had a set of the Algonquins in Almond Bisque that I had to send back...wrong color.

I put them on top of my M60's in my greatroom and used them in place of them for a couple of days and was blown away...I set them to large to see how they would sound just by themselves without the sub. I was very impressed!

Know this was not exactly what you were looking for but as I did not have a set of the M3's previously, I was interested in hearing what these "outdoor" speakers sounded like "indoors".

I could see these also being used in a situation where SO input would like to have the speakers the same color as the walls...these could be painted to match any room and help them more "disappear"...

Waiting for my Cape Cod Grey set to get here...

Sound really great here.

My .02.

Regards,

WhatFurrer

How do I add an image to my message?

In order to add an image to your message or your signature, you must have the image already available on a web server. This can be an image on your own personal web page, for example. To place an image within a message, simply use the following Markup Tag:

[imag]http://www.url_to_image.com/image_name.gif[/imag]

For example, if you have an image called cateye.gif and its available from your own website at http://www.mywebsite.com/pics, then you would use the following image markup:

[imag]http://www.mywebsite.com/pics/cateye.gif[/imag]

I spelt image wrong so you could see the code or else it tries to add the image I'm referencing.

Hay,

You can get a free image hosting account from http://www.photobucket.com and upload your pictures there.

Then you can use the code in the FAQ (substituting the URL for photobucket and the specific image name) to get the image to appear...

Hope this helps.

Regards,

WhatFurrer

Thanks for the input, even if it's not a direct comparison.

The reason I was asking is essentially the point you made: If the outdoor speakers sound just as good as the indoor ones, there's no reason not to consider an ourdoor for indoor use if the color/finish works for you....

I've been wondering about M3s as studio/editing monitors for awhile, and the white, almond and Cape Cod could ALL work for the editing rack....

Stymie,

What mounts did you use for that installation? And where did you get them?

Good question. I went to one of the big box stores (EE)and picked up a pair of universal speaker mounts. I can't remember the brand name and have misplaced the extra pieces/directions. When I find them I'll post the name.

Unfortunately, the universal holes on the brackets didn't match up with the mounting holes on the back of the speakers. So, I went to Home Depot and picked up two nail brackets (basically sheet metal with existing holes) designed to keep two side beside pieces of wood together. They were ~$0.50 each. I used those in combination with the universal speaker mounts. If you look closely at the pic, you see the sheet metal sticking out above the speakers.

I need to go back and trim the metal to give it a cleaner look. It may not be ideal, but I like the down angle that I was able to achieve once mounted.

edit - I was under the impression that Electronic Express was nationwide, but it appears to be local to Tennessee. So, it's not as big as the other big box stores as I thought.

Mark,

Trust me already! The Algonquins sound as good as or better than the indoor M3s or I wouldn't have approved them for production. I'm a cranky old f--- and bitch about even the slightest edginess, coloration or non-linearity I detect in any existing or new speaker design from Axiom. I did extended double-blind listening tests to the Algonquin prototype(s) against the indoor M3s and went away happy.

I'm so glad that Whatfurrer was impressed with the Algonquin's sound quality.

You'd be making no audible sacrifices in sound quality if you used the Algonquins as monitors.
