Looks cool and all, but I like a simple flip style phone that works. The more bells/whistles (touch screen, etc), the more to go wrong... Then again, maybe I am too rough on phones, and I don't want to shell out that amount of cash for one that will be too easy to break... Now, from a "techy" point of view, it is cool, but give it another revision before jumping in with both feet. Besides, the more features you add (to any phone) the more you have to pay a month in fees and subscriptions.

I need them to make a camera free version... they aren't allowed at work. Oh well, who knows. I love my Blackberry, but I wish the internet was a bit better. Also, I'd like to get my 20GB iPod out of my pocket. Who knows, I'll not be buying one for a while (I have to get my Axioms first ) -Todd...

You're missing an option: To say: "I am SO much cooler than you"

A paperweight. /Rant IMHO, the iPhone is the most over-hyped piece of technology for 2007. Just get ready for AT&T wanting to charge you $40+/month for just the data plan that won't include text messages, on top of the $500 for 4GB (with a freaking 2 year contract) price. A Windows Mobile 8525 will cost you a couple hundred bucks less (go buy a 30GB iPod), or can be purchased with a zero-year or 1-year contract. It will do more (3G data, push email, a keyboard, 3rd party apps, etc). Not to mention that I wouldn't trust the battery in the iPhone, as I've never had an iPod battery last more than about 12-16 months before it starts to lose it's capacity. /Rant off Look, I love my iPods. I'm not an anti-Apple zealot. As a geek, I'll certainly drool over the first iPhone I see in person, but I really think it's overpriced & under-featured. The gyro-sensor is neat, and I'm sure we'll see similar features on the next gen Palm/Blackberry/WM models. I've had my Cingular 8125 SmartPhone for over a year. I paid about $300 for it with a 1 year contract (my local store still does them, you just have to ask). It does everything the iPhone does and more: Email (with Direct Push - 'tis awesome), web browsing (with multiple browsers, if I choose), streaming audio (TCMP player), XM Radio (via XMRO), video (view & capture), camera (not the greatest, but it works), Edit & view Word & Excel documents, eBooks, PDF's, Google maps, Bluetooth, WiFi, not to mention the thousands of apps that are available... The lack of keyboard/stylus is *bad*. I *know* that Apple claims that it's easy to use, and the commercials demonstrate to everyone how easy it is. But I'll believe it when I see it. The first time you use the iPhone as a phone, as any Palm/Blackberry/WM user will tell you, you're going to get 'face grease' on the screen. Now, in Apple's infinite wisdom, you've got to use your fingers to navigate the screen. So you're smearing the grease all over everywhere. Not to mention whatever gunk you've got on your fingers anyway. It becomes a real mess. I predict a surge in wet-wipe usage. With dedicated buttons and/or stylus entry, you avoid some of that. And as easily as iPod screens scratch, I hope Apple did their homework and did something better for the touch-screen. OTOH, I do hope that the iPhone and all of the hype gives the Windows Mobile & Palm camps a swift kick in the behind as far as product & software development goes. Palm development in particular has been stale for the past few years. Microsoft hasn't been much better.

And I'll correct myself. The plan prices were announced today:
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/06/26plans.html
$60 for 450 minutes w/ unlimited data + 200 SMS isn't that bad, as they decided not to sock the iPhone with the usual PDA-Connect data plan that add's $+40/month.

I'm just going to ask PeterC to compose all my future replies.
I'm going to use the iPhone for another data point in the expanding set of GeekMockery indicators.

Is that a good thing?

And that's the whole point of the iPhone.
It's the Paris Hilton of phones. It's cool, it's hip, it's like so totally cool. Ohmygod it's an iPod AND a Phone! Like wow, ok!? ...
And those that brandish them are just as cool and hip as the phone, cuz it's cool.
One must give credit to Apple for creating a PDA phone that is 'cool' and 'chic', and that appeals to the masses. I guarantee that it'll start appearing in the hand/purse/Mercedes Benz of various celebrity photographs in the various magazines very soon. HP/HTC/Microsoft/Palm have never really done that. Blackberry sort of had/has that mistique with the whole 'crackberry' nickname, but they never really capitalized on it. Apple has long known the power of making things easy to use, marketing, and spiffy packaging. Even though I think it's over-hyped and silly, I predict the iPhone will set all sorts of sales records and be heralded as one of the 'big things' for 2007.

Unlike almost everyone in the universe, it seems, I'm withholding judgment on the phone's usability and interface until I actually play with one. Like the iPod before it, this so-called ground-breaking, tide-turning, <insert slightly exaggerated adjective here> Apple product is being panned left and right by tech media. It'll still sell like hotcakes and rake in the money for Apple and AT&T. Quote:

I have to single out that comment. You can't browse the web and enjoy it on current devices. It's a pain in the ass. I've got an iPaq with a decent size screen and it murders most websites. You can browse the web, but not like the iPhone can.
The face grease comment is valid, but at least the thing has optical quality glass and not plastic so it'll be even easier to clean than other devices -- and harder to scratch.
I won't be buying one, though. You can bet that the innovations in the iPhone will be making their way (minus the phone/email/web stuff) to an iPod near you soon.
