Hello,
What happens to the audio quality when a DVD is conerted to MP4 format?
If we play an MP4 format video using Apple TV, does it produce the same audio quality as a DVD?

What are you using to convert the DVD to MP4 format? MP4 is just a container and can contain varying qualities of audio and video.

Well generally if you are converting from DVD to another format you will always be losing quality.
If converting to MP4 there is also different bitrates or quality that you can choose. The lower the bitrate the lower the quality. I had converted a number of movies to mkv container using the X264 codec at a mid - hi quality. These looked fine on my older smaller tv. But now that I bought a 42" LCD, I can see the quality difference so have reripped them without converting to a diff format.

You can preserve the AC3 audio exactly the same as it was in the org DVD (pretty sure) as you can in an AVI container.
MP4's based on the H.264 codec look amazing for their size.
