I just finished setting up all my old audio stuff in a spare bedroom for when my dad comes to visit.
To make a long story short: I assumed that component video cables were simply standard 75ohm cables tied together and packaged in such a way as to bilk the consumer of a little extra cash. I stripped the three wires apart and used one of them as the RCA video link between my TV and Sega Dreamcast. Everything on the screen went blue!
I have since disconnected the offending cable but it seems some sort of permanent damage has been done to that particular input on the TV. No matter what device I now plug in (VCR, cable box, video game) using a REGULAR 75ohm video RCA cord - the picture is tinted heavily in blue. Luckily it hasn't affected the S-video or cable coax input or I would really be screwed.
Could this really be caused by using that component video cord? Or am I missing something?

Ya didn't happen to be listening to the "blues", while doing the cabling described? (sorry BigWill...couldn't resist!).

My instinct tells me that it can't be the cable. For one, component video cables are simply 75-ohm RCA cables. Are you sure the TV's input was fine before you attached the cable and Dreamcast? A connection on the inside may have come loose at the precise moment you attached the cable.

Just throwing another voice in here to assure you, component cables are just regular 75 Ohm RCAs. The TV must have been screwed prior to this.

The home theater gods were punishing you for stripping a perfectly good component cable from its two siblings.
you shall watch blue television until you are blueberry like the girl in willy wonka... or, you could get your TV fixed

Perhaps just Kable Karma.
Cables can't be responsible for this misadventure, yet ... your first thought was that it must be the cables. Clearly, down deep, you're unsure of your unequivocal pronouncement that cables can't make a difference.
Here's a suggestion - try some of these on a 30 day trial and tell me they don't make a difference.

It looks like a medieval nose torture devices to me.... I believe many audiophiles who sold their soul to high-end cables had their bodies drawn over hot coals with such a device.
