I was just sitting here and was wondering for those people that have the Q's mounted on the ceiling with various DIY and MFG'd brackets, have you ever tried mounting them so the woofers fire to the left/right and the tweeters angled up/downward? This is a hard picture to judge, but all of my Q's are mounted with some DIY brackets I picked up from Menards. I was just looking up at them and noticed I could twist them 90deg. This would allow one tweeter to be aimed downward towards the listeners, and the other would be reflected off the ceiling slightly and then back down towards the listeners. The woofers would be free from the limitations of being to close to the ceiling. With my 4 Qs8's in this orientation, it might lead to an interesting experiment.

I don't know how you can possibly go to sleep tonight Randy without first trying this.

Had you mounted your QS's with the bolt you could be already involved in your own experiment.

ha ha lol Actually, I already have all 4 of my Q's rotated but I can't really test it out thoroughly as the rest of the family is upstairs sleeping. I think this might be interesting because the lower tweeters seem to be aiming below the listeners ears and the upper tweeters are reflecting off the ceiling and then bouncing down on top of the listeners heads. So I'm still getting enveloped in the sound just vertically instead of horizontally. Maybe this could be a new standard.

In regards to the stand, I never understood why Axiom just doesn't make a stand that makes use of the mounting bolt in some way. This would put the whole bottom driver problem to rest.

When I was originally looking I had thought of a single posted stand with a plate on it that supported the back of the Qs's and a longer bolt went through the pole and the plate into the QS. I then thought about making the post telescopic just to make it adaptable to any ones room.

Next you should try a 45 degree twist for a nice balance.

And then just have them face the wall to see if a more reflected sound make them sound like B.... well you know.

I tried this and they sounded pretty awesome turned vertically, not sure I'll keep them that way. They are very forgiving.

Not to piss in your coffee, but I bet any difference in the sound probably falls into the psycho-acoustic range. The Qs are so diffusive (not to mention the woofers are still pumping out "localizable" frequencies, by and large), that changing the position probablky just results in a slight tonal difference, rather than a different spacial feel.
That said, what do I know? I would think that, for the side surrounds, the more diffuse sound field would be preferable. The rear surround, though, might be different.
Have you tried spinning the rears only? You might get some neat localized sounds from the rear of the soundstage with Dolby PLIIx.
Interesting experiment.

I'll have to give that a try. None of this is permanent, just playing around.

That's what makes it fun.
ANd the best part is that its free to try - no spending a grand to find out of some theory will pan out or not.
