I just put in the "upgrade" request to Dish last night to get HD. There is normally a $180 upgrade fee (I was quoted this 2 months ago), but right now they are knocking off $80, and then give a $100 credit back to your account so that becomes basically a free upgrade. HD channels are free for 6 months, and I signed up for Dish DVR advantage which doesn't cost anything, and saves me $0.98 a month now, and then locks my prices in for a year so that I don't get hit with their $3 price increase on my package, effectively saving me $4 a month as well. (Offers end 1/31/08) Anyway, I know that I will be getting 30 channels of HD now (without any PPV or pay channels in there), but I was reading something yesterday about how Voom channels are on dish. Voom advertises 35 channels of HD, so what gives? Will it be 30 or will it be 35? Also, I heard that they are adding SciFi channel. Does anyone know a date on that? I saw some posts from back in early December saying that the channel was in the lineup, but not broadcasting yet, and then another post from a few days ago said that it still wasn't available yet. I know that they plan to add more capacity this year, just like DirecTV did last year, and we know that capacity does not = # of channels available. Is there a list of the channels available now, and a list of what is planned for 2008, or is that still up in the air? I'm so excited about finally getting this. I went with the 662 (200 hours of standard def/30 hours of HD) HD/DVR receiver since this will be feeding my theater and the TV in my kitchen. We already have a 552 (100 hours of standard def) feeding our living room and bedroom. I could have gone with the 772 for another 150 hours of SD and 20 hours of HD recording, but it was another $50, and then my upgrade wouldn't have been "free." Besides, we have a hard time watching everything that is on our 552 right now, I'm not sure that we really need THAT much more unwatched TV.

Congrats Nick, I'm not sure what Dish offers, but when I started getting all the HD channels on DirecTV I pretty much stopped watching anything on SD.

I am happy with my selection of hd channels from my cable company.
I thought about dish, but The start up fees and service contracts turned me off.
I don't really watch any SD tv anymore either.
mostly I watch discovery hd theater, discovery hd, nat geo hd, A & E hd, espn 1 and 2 hd, science channel hd, and history channel hd. animal planet hd is ok too. The local hd channels have good sitcoms/ series shows too but I don't get into those too much because I spend most of my tv time watching movies or playing games.
My girlfriend likes completely different channels then I do. She watches both HD and SD channels. For some reason she is not the least bit interested in the formation of mountains due to plate tectonics, the history of the world, or shows such as mythbusters.... go figure

My wife has no interest in that type of program either. Go figure.

We watch Dirty Jobs and Mythbusters together, although she generally passes on the Novas. OTOH, I generally pass on the Natures and the like.

Yeah, my wife is into her Law and Order shows, American Idol, and any of those dancing shows. I do get her to watch Chuck and The Unit with me at least. Now my youngest daughter (turns 9 in a week) will watch Discovery Channel shows with me, although I haven't seen that one about plate tectonics yet. Maybe in HD... We have been getting OTA HD for a little while now using an old Voom sat. receiver that I got from someone here (boy, I don't remember who, I'll have to look that up). I just ignore the satellite part and use its OTA HD tuner. Problem is, we pretty much NEVER watch live TV. Too much running around and stuff to do, so it has to be a scheduled event in order to see it in HD, that is why I am going to love having the HD DVR. Oh, terzaghi, where I live I have the choice of Dish, DirecTV, or the local cable company. To get DVR at all TVs, HD on one of those, and digital on the others (I know, satellite is all digital), Dish was the best value for me and the channels I want/am willing to pay for. The local cable company wanted to charge me about $120 a month and I'd still not have DVR on 2 of the TVs! Rip-Off! DirecTV was about $20 or so more than Dish for what I wanted.

I got a dish 722. I had a 508 / 625 but with the new Sony XBR2, i needed the HD and ofcourse HD DVR Dish was asking me to pay for the upgrade, so i closed my account and got a new account with my cell phone number and got the 722 for free. I love it. The USB port on it allows to copy HD content to a computer

Thanks terzaghi, yeah HBO and such seem like such a waste. We get "free pay channel" weekends every now any then, and I find that it just wouldn't be worth it , for us anyway. We've been using Netflix, although only for 3 months. Avi Deshpande, first off "Welcome"... Secondly, yeah, I thought about creating a new account, but again, with 2 DVRs in the house, that gives us 300 hours of SD, or 100 hours of SD and 35 hours of HD. I don't have time to record everything, let alone watch it I'll have to check out the ability to download content to my PC. I wonder what that Ethernet port is for... Hmmmm...
