I'd like to start a discussion here about the reliability of HK amps and receivers. Back in the late 70's I had a HK stereo receiver. It looked kind of cheap, but I just loved the sound. Of course, this bugger burnt out a month after the warranty expired. And I here talk all over the internet and elsewhere that this brand is unreliable, yet many people seem to own them. So, the question I am asking is Why would anyone buy these things?

...because they're not as unreliable as the rumors suggest? All brands have their duds. I guess H/K dud owners may me more vocal than other brand owners.

I own an HK AVR525. Before purchasing it, also read about HK reliability problems, and read about how owners loved them.

I think HK had some reliability issues a few years ago. That fact, coupled with the fact that they sell much of a lot of their refurbed stuff through their own online store, and through online retailers, makes their reliability issues more visible on the internet.

I am very happy with my HK. One of the features it has that no other receiver has at that price point is bass managment on the analog 5.1/7.1 connections. I think it is a great feature for those thinking about getting into SACD's and DVD-A's.

My Father just bought a b-stock HK stereo receiver. I was impressed...it was only $188.

I've had no problems with my refurb 525. I've had it for 6 months. (of course, I also bought an extended warranty, but...)
