You know those black tweeter protectors? Has anyone removed them? Any effect on the sound quality?

Those are not "protectors" -- they are phase shields that provide important adjustments in high-frequency response and off-axis dispersion. If you remove it, the tweeter's frequency response will go crazy like a roller coaster. I wouldn't highly recommend you go for the surgery...

Ditto to sushi, 2x6; quite a few tweeters have diffusers of various configurations in front of them, primarily to aid in high frequency dispersal. Plus, if you recall the incident of a week or so ago with the idiot roommate, they don't protect enough against folks like that.

Fact is, nothing will protect you from an idiot without boundaries but with a screw driver.
