Just curious if anyone has tried the Magnavox NB500MG9 BluRay player for $278? Seems to have pretty good reviews.

hmmm... off to read some quick reviews.
I want to buy a bluray player soon, perhaps this week.
I have enough best western reward points to get almost $200 worth of gift certs from best buy or walmart too.

Read through a thread over at AVS and I am pretty sure I will get this player.
Downside is no ethernet/profile 2.0... I really don't see myself using that feature anyway. I would like an ethernet for potential firmware upgrades though.
It bitstreams all of the HD audio formats for my denon3808 to decode via hdmi, so that is great. If you don't have an hdmi receiver that decodes these formats then your out of luck, because the player won't do it.
I just have to decide between this and the PS3... I don't need all the streaming/networking features of the PS3 because my xbox 360, xbox media center, and denon 3808 handle that just fine. I am not sure if there are enough good games on the PS3 that justify the extra cash.

I am not sure if there are enough good games on the PS3 that justify the extra cash. There is very little on PS3 that's not on xbox 360, although I'm very happy with the PS3 I still get a little irked every time I use it because of the blutooth.

I don't really care about universal remotes at this point, and I bought the PS3 remote, so I'm good. Also, I hate to admit it, but it seems like there's going to be enough exclusive software on the PS3 that I'll actually start buying some more.

As much as people complain about the denon 3808 remote I really like it... and want to program it to control the bluray player. I see no need to drop a couple of hundred doullars on another universal remote. I have it set to turn on the tv, the receiver, the cabel box, and then open the cable guide all with the press of a button. Also, how much did the ps3 remote set you back? which titles are upcomming ps3 exclusives? go on, try and convince me to get a ps3

I am still waiting for a sub $200 Blu-Ray player with analog audio outs... That will probably never happen, so by the time I feel the need to spend several hundred dollars on a new receiver to decode HD audio via HDMI, disc based movies will be gone and everyone will be downloading movies from online sources (legally)...

The PS3 remote is around $20.00, the main elusive games that I know of would be Final Fantasy XIII, Resident Evil 5, and Gran Turismo, I'm sure there are others but Sony has been very slow at getting new titles for the console.

final fantasy XIII is comming to xbox360 now. (simultaneous release in N America w/ PS3)
Gran turismo would be great, but Forza motorsport on xbox 360 kinda makes up for it.

I guess the main ones I'm interested in are LittleBigPlanet and God of War III (even though I haven't played the first two).

As to the remote, keep in mind this solution, which solves the BluRay vs. IR quandary: IR2BT PS3 Remote They're sold out now, but regularly restock and send out new units. I don't have one myself, but have read several good reviews of them.

I gotta ask. Is there a Pro-Platunum Super Delux with Extra More?? I'm gonna go press the on buttons on my display and receiver now so I can watch some more Battle Star Galactica.

OK, so seriously I can't decide between the magnavox and the PS3... Can someone remind me what the disadvantages is of the newer ps3 system? no backward compatibability? no sacd? anything else?

Sounds like you want the PS3, if you want the sacd and other options, get a 20gig, 60gig or last years 80gig, all are still available if you search. One really nice thing about the PS3 as a blu-ray player is that it loads super fast.

I just reread my note - make that Bluetooth versus IR... I'm pretty sure there is no conflict between BluRay and infrared. HomeDad - thanks for the info... good to know of another option that is actually available if I decide to take the plunge. For now, I haven't found it a huge problem to use the PS3 remote for Power On/Off/PS3 button, though at some point it may become more annoying than it is now. Have you purchased anything to convert IR to Bluetooth or are you using the standard controller? Jason

[Have you purchased anything to convert IR to Bluetooth or are you using the standard controller?]
I've got the Nyko device that allows my Harmony to do everything but turn the PS3 on and off, but there is still a delay factor when using it for most of the functions, I've also got the Sony Bluetooth remote for turning the unit on and off when I'm not using a game controller. I still just want my Harmony to be able to do it all, so I got on the IR2BT's mailing list to see when it will be available again, if they don't start producing them by next week I'm going to grab a PS3IR-Pro. I'll give a review of whatever unit I buy in the next couple weeks.

Apparently best buy has an insignia bluray player that is pretty much the same as walmart's magnavox. I think the magnavox, insgnia, and sylvania players are all just the same rebranded player made by funai. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?...d=1204332499513I am going to buy my player from best buy since my best western reward points can purchase best buy certs in incrimates of $25 so i can get $175 worth of certs. at walmart they only offer $100 gift certs and I don't have enough points for 2 of em. So.... step one: wait on best buy gift cards in mail... step two: decide between the insignia player or the ps3.

Well I ordered a dozen cd's or so from amazon today.. and I also threw in the Dave matthews and Tim reynolds Bluray, as well as the John Mayer Bluray. I already own the Dave Matthews and tim reynolds on dvd but want to have the TrueHD soundtrack.
Now when I have two blurays show up at my doorstep and I have no bluray player I think I will make my mind up fairly quickly on which of these players I want.

Well I decided I am going to buy a PS3. I explained to my Girlfriend the difference between the different bluray profiles and explained that we can get the ps3 for around $250 after my girft certificates.
She said "Well if we are buiying a PS3 then I want to get games to go with it"
I said, "like Metal Gear Solid 4?"
She said, "Sure, whatever you want."
So that pretty much settled it... The only stipulation she gave me was that I had to buy games too... pretty good deal eh?

Wow, I'm surprised you agreed. I think that's the way to go, really, probably until a couple more generations of players come out, and even then it'll probably still be debatable.

I received my PS3IR-PRO today and it works like a charm, easy to setup, no delays like the Nyko unit has, and now I can finally use my Harmony to turn the PS3 on and off. The only gripe I have is that you need to get a USB power charger, not that they are expensive, but when you pay $100.00 for the device I think everything should be included. Other than that I'm very satisfied with the product.

Isn't that the beauty of this forum? No one yells at you for hijacking a forum... they just politely remind you that you have indeed hijacked a forum, to which you sheepishly grin in response and then go on discussing whatever you want (with 20 other people who are happy to oblige). Speaking of that... I just listened to the first few tracks of the new John Mayer Bluray. Wow, awesome Blu-Ray... (I'll write more later as soon as I find another equally unrelated thread to post in) Jason

From wikipedia:
-----
In the run up to 2000, Russian supply of palladium to global market was repeatedly delayed and disrupted because the export quota was not granted on time, due to political reasons. The ensuing market panic buying drove the palladium price to an all-time high of $1100 per ounce, reached in January, 2001. During the time period, the Ford Motor Company, fearing auto vehicle production disruption due to a possible palladium shortage, stockpiled large amounts of the metal, purchased near the price high. As prices subsequently fell in early 2001, Ford lost nearly $1 billion U.S. dollars.

Congrats David! You went nuts on renting games... There's enough material there for months of gaming. I haven't played GT5, but enjoyed Heavenly Sword and MGS4. Heavenly Sword is actually a good rental as it's a very short game (comparatively). You actually could get through it in a (really) heavy weekend of gaming. MGS is great for demoing the gaming capabilities of the PS3... High def video and 7.1 Dolby Surround Sound... pretty amazing for a game! Have fun. Jason
