I have the opportunity to purchase a 2 1/2 year old Epic Grand Master system.

I have 2 questions:

1) The QS8 had holes drilled in order to mount on the wall. The owner said this version of the QS8's did not have pre-drilled mounts but that this does not affect the speakers sonically. Is this true?

2) These speakers are not the v2 versions, e.g. they are the M22ti. What has changed between the v2 and ti versions? Are there large differences in sound?

The sub is the EP350 (I think its the version before v3)

The center is the 150

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

1) - Don't know, but someone else surely will.

2) From what I've read in the past, the differences are very minor with the exception of the sub. The difference between the old EP-350 and the current is significant. The newest 350 has gotten rave reviews as a real step forward from the prior version. I'm not saying the old 350 is bad... just that there is a noticeable difference there between old/current.

shiuchewan,

I have older M22s that do not have the pre-drilled mount. I recently attached Axiom's Full Metal Brackets to them, which required drilling four holes into the rear of the cabinets. As long as the screws you use fit tightly, no air should escape so the sound will be unaffected. That was certainly the case for me.

I would check with Axiom as to the age of the speakers(send them the serial numbers if you can get them) as my 4yr old QS8s have the mounting bolt in them as do the M22s and VP100 I have from the same time.

The EP350v2 is a nice sub but definitely not up to todays standards.

Keep in mind you can save 10% if you purchase new through the factory outlet, and another 5% if you buy at least 5 speakers at a time.

I would suggest going into the factory outlet and finding out the cost of all of these speakers. If the used speakers aren't at least half the price of the factory outlet price then I wouldn't buy them. (that is just my opinion though)

I agree that the 350 v2 sounds like the weakest link in that system.

I agree with checking the factory outlet prices to see how good the deal is.

Thanks for all the responses. I will definately get and check the serial #s to ensure the age.

The price asked for ep350, v150, 2 x m22ti, 2 x qs8 is $700, but I'll be responsible for shipping which I guess would be around $150 via DHL.

Any thoughts?

At that price, I'd jump all over it. I have the EP350v2, and even thought it's not state of the art, it's still a very good sub. The other components are all above reproach and could serve you well for many years.

Yeah, for $700, there's no questions to be asked other than "Does it work?"

I wouldn't jump on them so quick. At only 2 1/2 years old they should be the V2 version. As I understand it the changes were made in the later part of 03. If I am correct on the time line, I could be off by a little, the seller is not totally truthful as to their real age.

Yeah, great deal if the speakers work, or the sellers kids have dented all the woofers or peeled the vinyl.

Consider that I just spent $360 on a VP150 to finalize that same system and $700 is a good price.

I have an older pair of M22s that I use as surrounds that I had to mount the full metal bracket on. I initially put the brackets in a spot that did not allow the speakers to be angled down enough. I had to move the bracket which left 4 screw holes in the back of the speaker. I can't tell that the holes are there - the speakers sound just fine.

Thanks all for your input.

I unfortunately couldn't afford the speakers and the shipping. UPS estimated $300 to get the speakers to me and $1000 was more than I wanted to spend.
