Now I need a new one. I am waiting for the BDP-83 but in the interim I need a replacement. BluRay, or not? Price is less important than value so perhaps this very helpful group could start a discourse to point me in the right direction.

It’s sort of difficult to make any recommendations without knowing what features you want and what if anything you want to use it for after the Oppo comes out. Either the Oppo DV-980H or DV-981HD are both great but they are about $170 and $230 respectively. If you just want something to tide you over then a Philips DVP5982/37 DVD Player could work but at that low price likely wont play SACD. Sorry to hear about your player hope it didn’t damage anything else. Kind of curious how it caught fire?

Quality of picture is the primary concern followed by multiple codecs.

Warrent, maybe this would suit you, upconversion is excellent and you get a record feature. Toshiba DR410 1080p Upconverting Tunerless DVD Recorder, $109 Amazon.

Kind of curious how it caught fire? Me too, can't say I've ever heard of that issue before. Oppo's are very good, they also have a Blu Ray player coming out soon.

Well I have no explanation beyond, my wife turned it on and it started to smoke. I will pull the cover off shortly to determine the source. Although a spiffy electronic piece fell out as I was carrying it to the garbage. Knowing very little about the black arts, I'm guessing it's cap.
Could it be that my wife is hot? ;-)

Could be, do you go up in smoke whenever she turns you on?

Could be, do you go up in smoke whenever she turns you on? Hmmm, it could be a little "premature" to answer that

I have an Oppo 982 and a Denon 2500 Blu-ray. The picture on both with a SD Dvd is very coparable. The picture and the audio on the Denon with a BD is much better. I am definitely a convert to Blu-ray.
