This whole package is very impressive, it had better be rock solid after all the delays.

Yes, the demonstration of the 972 with Trinnov considerably increases the interest in the Audioholics show. As I've commented in the past, Trinnov has the potential, if enough of the capability of the Pro model($12,000)reviewed last year by Dr. Rich in Sensible Sound(very detailed, 20 pages)is implemented in the 972, to take over the lead from the Audyssey MultEQ XT. Of course, price would also be a consideration.

I have always heard good things about the S/N products. It is interesting to note that the company is NOT bringing out a pre-pro like they did before based on the receiver, less amps. It seems Outlaw's new 997 will more or less be the Sherwood pre-pro that will never be, with a few modifications, of course.

Perhaps Axiom might want to advise us all when they plan on having this unit available for sale along with some other S/N equipment listed in the Audioholics article and how much?

I'm a little suprised it does not have more like 110-120 watts per channel. I know there is very little difference in 10-20 watts, but a little more headroom never hurt anyone. \:\)

Nice looking unit though, clean and symetrical - I don't think 100wpc should be an issue for most HTs unless you are getting in to a larger 2500 - 3000 + area and if so, then you would most likely have an amp to compensate.

I thought S/N was/is known for under rating their amps? It could very well be 120-140wpc.

All I know is my little 80wpc Marantz has plenty of power in my 25 x 16 living room - I am rethinking my plans of purchasing an extra amp next spring - The S/N should have plenty of power

yeah, but the denon 3808 is claimed at 130wpc and I am pretty sure that is an under-rated conservative number too. (at least I read something at audioholics about one of the lower end denons being way udner-rated so I assume that the higher end ones are too)

But yeah, I don't think it would be a problem... just sounds a little low.

I know HK has always been a conservative rating, nice to know SN follows the same practice, unlike Sony. \:\)

These lab tests showed the 3808 meets the all channels driven spec at it's rated 130W/ch.@1% distortion and it does go up for 5 channels driven to 137w and 187w for 2 channels, so it is not an overachiever with respect to all channels driven.

Just to emphasize that the Denon, along with most other receivers, doesn't rate power under an all-channels driven spec. The basic two-channels driven test number acceptable under the FTC regs(full rated power for at least five minutes continuously) is used and is met with some room to spare, as is typical of the other makes of receivers as well. This of course contradicts frequent complaints by some audiophiles that published power ratings are "exaggerated", or even "lies". It's rather ironic that some of the folks who say these things are willing to believe that totally unproven sonic characteristics of players, amplifiers and even pieces of wire exist, while they're suspicious about the only aspect of audio performance that's actually subject to specific regulations.

Perhaps JohnK isn't aware that the FTC regulations from the late 60s through the 80s was overturned in the "deregulation," era. I know a lot of people who had no idea that the FTC no longer regulated watt ratings as they once did in the 70s.

Back to topic, I'm scared of buying any more Sherwood products. I recently found out that the R872 won't accept a 1080p signal! There is no way to just pass the Blu Ray signal through the receiver! How crazy is that?

I hear the R972 won't have the problem, but I still can't believe they sell the R872 crippled.

What does being an attorney have to do with knowing that the FTC no longer regulates watts like they once did?

Herkemer, welcome, but you'd be even more welcome if you didn't come to us with incorrect information. The amplifier Rule of the FTC is still in effect as of December 18, 2008 in 16 CFR Part 432 . Furthermore, the Commission has placed it on its 2008 review schedule for comments relating to possible amendments(don't hold your breath). The Commission had proposed further rulemaking on this point several years ago but terminated the rulemaking procedure about a year ago without making amendments.

So, among the "people who had no idea" about this is the FTC and also includes all the manufacturers who are required to comply with the Rule for units sold in the U.S. For example, yesterday I was studying the Onkyo 706 manual and noted that the specs include the full set of FTC required data points, identified as such.

It's a quote, but probably not his mother. Golda Meir said it to Moshe Dayan.

And yes, I had to look the quotation up on Google.

So you're stating that today's FTC regulations are as strict as they were in the 70s? You're saying that during the Reagan era most of the restrictions were not removed (and to this day never replaced)?

Nothing I said was incorrect. The extremely strict regulations that were made in the 70s from all the inaccurate adverts from the 60s were removed from FTC regulations. Yes, there are still regulations but they aren't as strict as they were in the 70s. So companies can continue to twist facts.
