I have to agree, even ventilated like mine is (open air on 3 sides) it is too loud in dialog heavy scenes or movies, it really takes me out of it.
I can't agree with the PS3 complaints however, I have the 60GB model, and now that I have it out of my entertainment center in open air as well I don't have any problems with fan noise or the like.

my 360 and ps3 are both open on all sides, top and back. The 360 is WAY loud, and the PS3 is quite.

Meh.... I'd pick up the XBox 360 over PS3 in a heartbeat. I borrowed one from a friend a while back and when I had it in my equipment rack, I didn't hear it over anything else in the cabinet Al beit my Dish 772 is somewhat fan-noisy so that may have masked it.
If I got the PS3, it would be for movies only, if I got the XBox 360 I'd play games on it too since I like the selection there better than on the PS3.
In the end, though, I'll probably just end up with a stand alone unit, but I am glad that there is at least talks of Microsoft bringing out a BD drive. More competition is just what Sony needs...

An add-on drive for the 360 wouldn't be appealing to me at all. Is it even possible to get the new sound formats out of the 360's HDMI port? And yeah, it's too loud. My PS3 gets loud, too, but not as loud if I prop the door open with a Blu-ray case, which is what I've been doing. I think the only way Blu-ray on the 360 would be attractive for me is with a brand new 360 with Blu-ray drive included and a redesigned audio path. Even then, the PS3's playback would probably still trump it. Still, at least people will have an option, even if it's not an ideal one.

CV I don't know how it could get out of the 360's ports, I believe that was one of the main things that hobbled the HD DVD drive is that the sound formats couldn't get out. however that may have been solved with the addition of the HDMI port on the newer 360's, but I didn't follow it that long.

I think I remember them saying that they couldn't even get out through the HDMI-equipped 360's because of the way the entire audio section was designed. I could be wrong.

Once they get the video portion down, it should be time for the next gen X-box 1080(?) with full HD video and audio.

Here's hoping they don't rush the hardware and cheap out on parts on their next outing.

Consensus around the office gamers is that the 360 is beloved but from strictly a technical standpoint very inferior. Just about everyone here has 1 or more hardware failures since purchase. So far, no failures on the PS3 crowd.
The 360 does have more games but most big hits are multi-platform now that the platforms have matured.
You may still prefer a 360, which is fine. Last thing we want is a console monopoly. Just thought I'd pass on the thoughts from our local fellow geeks.
With great power comes Awesome irresponsibility.

Just about everyone here has 1 or more hardware failures since purchase. We just had our second failure in a year. First one was a fried video output. This one is the famous RROD. Not impressed. With the number of failures one would think a recall would be in order... Scott

I am on my 4th xbox 360. My first 3 died from the RROD. I managed to get something free everytime though. (games, a controller, some free xbox live ect.)

Microsoft strongly denies XBOX Blu-ray rumors, again... Microsoft

I love this part "He concludes "it will not be the next DVD format." " Ummm, isn't it already the next format, maybe not the most prolific format, but the next.
It must just be killing Microsoft to have to even think about putting Sony technology next to their own.

I have to say I must be one of the rare few to make it without a failed Xbox hardware wise. Never had the RROD or anything, and mine is from about 6 months from launch. I attribute it to never being in a cabinet, although I'm probably not alone there.

I bought mine right at launch and never had a problem, It's been in a cabinet the entire time.

I've had 1 RROD that got me a refurbished unit, and the other day I got a "warning", but all was fine with a reboot.
What concerns me most is that it only gets maybe an hour of use a week!
