I believe, the STF-2 is the same as the VTF-2 in max extension. The STF-3 is the same as the VTF-3 in max output mode. You should call Hsu on this

I have mine set for max extension. I just leave it there as well, as I can't imagine needing it to get any louder.

Thanks for all the helpful responses! I'm definitely getting the QS8's. I think I'm also going to get the stands for them. At first I was going to mount them on the wall but with the stands I'll be able to move them around. I would also have to mount the 8' up the wall to get over a window and a stairway.
As far as the subwoofer. I guess I'll wait and save some money and get the STF-2 series. This will help offset the cost of the stands for the QS8's.
Again thanks for everyones input you have been very helpful.

FYI, when I asked Hsu about "B" stock VTF-2's I was told that they do not come with the 30 day return policy that the "A" stock does if that's important to you.

In reply to:
For VFT owners, how ofter do you use that feature? All the time, not at all, whenever the mood strikes you?
Same here as Curtis. Once I settled on the subwoofer placement and basic configurations of my entire system (crossover, "small" vs. "large", etc.), I've left my VTF-3 in the maximum extension mode.

In personally think you should go with M6os for the mains and then move your M3's to the surrounds. If your eventual goal is to move the M3s to the back surround channels for 7.1 or to use them in another system entirely, then I would suggest getting the M60s now andlater get the QS8's. I think there will be a much better jump in quality by doing this than by just adding QS8s. But, if your budget does not allow, then it does not allow.

I don't use the feature often, but I like having another option, much like phase, to select what I feel sounds the best. I keep mine in max extension mode as well.

I agree. The variable port is a heck of a nice feature, giving you a substantial flexibility.
