I think you are right Eric. Sony and the studios are absolutely paranoid about someone grabbing the HD stream and writing it back to a disc bitperfect (counterfitting).

Creating a 'protected path' requires jumping through a lot of hoops: essentially putting a 'chastity belt' on each computer component in the chain.

How common is it for receivers to be able to decode 8 channel lpcm?

I have the 520W Corsair. It's been bulletproof, unlike my motherboard and video card.

Jay, that looks like a nice motherboard. Like mine, it dosn't seem to support HD audio in any way though.
I really haven't looked at the specs but my initial thought was the HD audio was sent over the HDMI signal.

thanks for the input guys. I've been reading more about htpc/denon on avs again and seems some people have gotten good results but the majority still have problems. Unfortunately for me I may have to try and find an alternative...onkyo, yamaha, or pioneer to drive my m80's. hmmm

WHat is it that you are looking to do with the HTPC, full out(audio and video) streaming to the Denon? What are the issues others are having?

I've been doing some reading and I don't think your board will handle the HD audio formats. It looks like only the most recent generation of onboard graphics will and its all 8 channel lpcm. For Nvidea I think thats the 7xx level.

Basically yes! I ideally want to have all my music and movies backed up on it and choose any song or movie at the click of a button instead of having to sort through a bunch of disks.

In short, the problem some people seem to have is that when they hook up the htpc through hdmi directly to the tv they get sound and audio but when they run it through the receiver to the tv they get video but no sound.
