I ran across this today and somehow missed it when it first came out. For anyone else interested, it's a good read. Algonquin Review

did you ever solve the problem of potential rain water in your speakers from the way they were mounted?

Yes, I just angled them up a bit more which decreased the downward angle of the port running into the speaker cavity. The increased angle came mainly from changing the way I'd attached the sturdy little brackets to the speaker housing. There are two holes in the back and I'd mounted it into the wrong one which accentuated the downward tilt of the speaker & port.
Granted, this aims the speakers a bit higher than I would ultimately like, but I'm not doing critical listening outside and it's proven to sound very good aimed as they are.

good to know! Algonquins are on my axiom wish list... along with an ep800, A-1400 8 amp, and a pair of audiobytes. I'm too scared to go into the products section and see how much that would all cost though!
...must resist upgrades... must buy ring...

Bought all at once and assuming an EPZero and no special finishes, $6705.10, if I did the math right. That'll make a very nice ring!

Or a substantial part of a down payment on house...... Who said that?

I knew someone would ruin my dream... Thanks CV!
I will probably get an ep800 at some point but hold off on the rest for quite some time (years likely). I am actually currently saving up for a downpayment on a house... but it is tempting to stop saving and start spending for some instant gratification!

Jay, I wish $6000 was a substantial part of a downpayment on a house. That would make life a lot easier.

Yeah.... tell me about it. I have saved quite a bit but still don't feel like it is anywhere near enough. but then again as long as I keep renting I am throwing away my money!

It's not throwing away money. You're paying your landlord to keep your standard of living higher.

Yeah... but it still would be nice to own a home and know that if you decide to move you can get that hard earned money you have spent on all those mortage payments back (or at least some of it)...

Jay, I wish $6000 was a substantial part of a downpayment on a house. That would make life a lot easier. It just depends on how much you need, but to me 6000 is a substantial start. 11 years ago we only put $17000 down a $140,000 house. I know now you need much more but $6000 is still alot of money that could go towards it.

No, $6K would be a good portion of it, but these days, it seems wise to put down 20%. Which on a $200K home (don't count on finding on in the SF Bay Area) is $40K. Yerk.

$200K can go a long way in Tulsa OK!... Ever thought about moving? Some Tulsa Homes (note: click on featured homes) This is actaully a pretty poor selection of what is available but you get the idea!

Not to mention the even more important factor - you have to actually be a little considerate of your neighbors in an apartment which decreases the enjoyment you can get out of your Axioms. (just trying to provide some happy justification for you to delay your speaker gratification) The sooner you move into a house, the sooner you will really (really) NEED a new amp, a bigger sub, etc. etc.

Tell me about it! A $200k house is a possibility here, but $40k on one income while supporting your kids. ouch!! I can only hope that house prices come down a little around here (have not done that much in Canada...yet).

I know of the painfull reality of the San Fran area, my sister is in Foster City. 30 - 40k was what I had in mind 11years ago, then I realized we could easily afford the payments on a house with much less down and I am very glad we did, as that was the start of the boom in Calgary. Our house is now worth about 390K, and still slowly dropping due to the economy, last summer it was worth about 425K , still a good investment.
