quick networking question.

My main router (linksys wrt54g) has a default ip address of 192.168.1.1
I set up a static ip address for my 2 desktops that are hardwired to the router. The gateway entered for these computers was 192.168.1.1 (the ip address of my router) everytinh works fine here.

Now I am trying to assign a static ip address to my denon 3808. The denon is hardwired to a linksys wireless gamin adapter (wga54g) which receives the network signal via wireless from the router mentioned above. The default ip address of the wga54g gaming adapter is 192.168.1.250. Would this *.250 be the correct gateway for the denon 3808 since it is plugged directly into the wireless gaming adapter?

The gateway is the device allowing your local LAN to communicate with the external world. Assuming your gaming adapter is a LAN extension device (sounds like it), then your gateway should be 192.168.1.1.

If the device is NOT is LAN extension, than you have a conflict as you may have two touching networks with the same subnet. (but it does sound like the purpose of your wireless gamign adapter is the correct one for your needs, so 192.168.1.1).

OK thanks.. I'll give 192.168.1.1 a try for the gateway. The gaming adapter simply lets my receiver connect to my wrt54g, and then from the wrt54g it can talk to my other computers or the outside world.... so yes it is as you describe.

Ok, one more question. I am trying to setup portforward for TVersity media server. I went to http://www.portforward.com , entered my router, and then clickd on Tversity to find the list of suggested ports to forward. Port 41952 is already enabled on my windows firewall (I was instructed to do this during install), but I never set up portforwarding in my router settings.

I am following the instructions on this page:

Should I enter the IP address of my router, my computer that TVersity runs on, the Wireless gaming adapter that picks up the signal, or my denon that plays it? on the example shown in the above link they just leave it blank. I similar example for xboxlive showed 2 ports to forward, and the ip address I had to enter was the one for my xbox in that case.

I'm hoping the slew of network changes I made will resolve my issue with a strict firewall/nat on xbox live and the Tversity/denon reset issue. I have everything on my network assigned to a static IP now and I forwarded the suggested ports for all services (xbox live, playstation network, tversity)

I wanted to get the denon on a static IP so I can set my GF's laptop up with either the command3808 or the standard web interface and not have to worry about ip addresses changing during a reset of some kind. Now she will be able control things like source seletion, radio presets, ect. from her laptop (when she opens it for Christmas) b/c she HATES the denon remote. But yeah, mostly I want to play around with it some too... Something tells me she won't appreciate all my configuration changes as much as I do

I concur. Port forwarding is necessary because although your network has a number of devices with their own IPs, as far as the rest of the internet is concerned, you only have one - the IP allocated to you by your ISP. It will be different to your internal IPs - it won't start with 192.168.1. You have port forwarding so your router knows which device to send the incoming data to, according to the port number attached to each incoming packet.

It's like phoning the switchboard and asking for extension 41952.

I still am having problems with Tversity media server and the denon. It seems liek very day or two the denon shows it as "TVersity media server (Not Authroized)" and I have to reset the media server.

I have port 41952 set to "open" or "allowed" on my windows firewall on the machine that runs TVersity, I have tjhe port forwarded in my router settings (with the IP address for the computer that has TVersity), and I disabled any other virus protection spyware or firewalls that that computer had besides windows firewall.

The same computer has a media server set up with Windows media player and it never needs to be reset... I can't share flac files with WMP or else I would get rid of TVersity alltogether.

Any other ideas?

I just posted a thread over at TVersity b/c I couldn't find any results with a google search (it actually pointed to this thread) and didn't think about trying the search feature over at TVersity. I will see if this works and report back in a day or two after I have had a chance to confirm.

Fixed the link David... I had Twonky on the brain while writing the response b/c that is what I use at home. After using both, I prefer Twonky, but b/c I don't stream FLAC, that limitation with Twonky isn't a factor for me.

I prefer Twonky largely because it handles video streaming better for the HD videos from my camcorder. Otherwise I've found the two to be pretty similar for my purposes.

There is an add-on to WMP11 that allows you to share FLAC files.

I downloaded the addon (the one from sourceforge) and now I can play flac files with WMP... however I still can't stream them over the network. Are you sure one of those patches should that should allow you to stream them as well as play them?

Anyway, I popped open the denon the denon GUI this morning and it sure seemed like myrison's fixed worked. Hopefully that will still be the case when I try it again.

Cool, glad to hear it. Funny thing is, I used Tversity for awhile and remember seeing that message in the past but ignoring it as I navigated past it through my Twonky menu. Never bothered to look it up for myself at the time.

Yeah, I have been dealing with this problem for a year now... just created an icon titled "restart TVersity" on my desktop and got into the habit of walking back to my computer every time I wanted to listen to music.

Have you allowed WMP to share your library? This is the only way to get WMP to allow anything else access to it.

Yeah, WMP shares all of my MP3's currently with my denon, xbox360 and PS3. When I installed the Sourceforge patch it allowed me to play flac file s(it wouldn't even recognize them before the patch) but it would not allow me to share them (Even when added to the library.)

Perhaps I was doing something wrong... or perhaps the patch allows them to be played but not shared for some reason.

Either way, I think TVersity is working now thanks to Myrison.
Let's hope it stays that way.

As long you have something working. It would be a bad thing to not be able to take advantage of the streaming ability of the 3808.

yeah... or in my case it was working but having to walk back and restart the media server every day was a real PITA.

Hey... My problem was a lot easier to solve! no fair!

TVersity is stil working flawlessly!

However, it looks liek this issue has been resolved as of 11/22.
One of the fixes in the newest patch is listed below:

Fix “Not Authorized” issue with Denon 3808 receiver (uses Philips SLA profile) that used to happen when turning the unit on and attempting to use it with TVersity after using it successfully the previous time it was on.

looks like this problem was noot unique to me.. glad it has been fixed!
