Ok, so the M80's will be here sometime soon and I was wondering what you guys would suggest, speaker setting wise, for use with a Denon 2307 CI. My thinking is:

Front speakers = Large
Subwoofer = yes, LFE + Main
Xover = 80

Now, my question is, will frequencies below 80 still be rolled off to the sub even though the speakers are set to large and sub set to LFE + MAIN? Or will this x over setting only affect speakers set to small?

Thanks

I would suggest all speakers to small, and crossover of 80hz to start. That is what I have on my 2805 and it works fine for both movies and music. Some like to lower the crossover a bit for music, I have found this is not needed in my case.

It is my understanding by setting the 80's to large, only the frequencies below 80hz for speakers set to small will be rolled off, not the 80's.

A large setting means the M80s will be full range and the LFE+ setting allows for the sub to still be active with frequencies starting around the 80hz range and lower.

I run my system with M80s small and the crossover at 60hz. I get the flattest response this way.

I would just play around and run the M80s the way you like them the best, just remember when you set the Sub to LFE+Mains and speakers large, the Sub gets anything around the crossover point and lower, while the M80s get everything. Once the speaker setting is moved to small, the LFE+mains feature is not required as the Denon will automatically bypass this setting and do a rolled off crossover point on the mains(actually all speakers set to small work this way) and send the rest to the sub.

I believe though the sub does not get the 80's freq's below 80hz, only the other speakers. At least that is what my Denon 2805 manual states.

That is what the '+' stands for in LFE + Mains, the sub gets what the mains get as well, or are you thinking mains with small setting?

No, I was thinking that when the mains are set to large they get the full range, and when LFE + Main is selected, the 80's/sub also get anything below 80hz from the other speakers. However, it didn't sound like the stuff below 80hz from the 80's got routed to the sub, since they are large, only the other speakers. I may have to reread my Denon manual, my 2805 is older.

Just set the M80s to large and play a 40hz tone then check to see what is playing, I know my 3808 plays out through both mains and sub with LFE + mains used and Mains set to large, thus the highly debated idea of double bass.

Roger, I'd suggest setting all speakers "small" with the 80Hz crossover. If this is done the "+ mains" setting isn't applicable, since it only takes effect when the mains are set "large". If the mains are set large, they play full-range. If the + mains setting is used, the sub also plays the low bass in the mains channel below the set crossover frequency.
