So my wife got me a pair of High Gloss Cherry QS8s for christmas. I hooked them up a few days ago. At first I thought they were a bit quiet. They seemed to only play ambient noises. I wondered why I needed such a large speaker with 2 tweeters and 2 woofers just for ambient noises. I really noticed them working though when playing metal gear solid on the ps3. They really helped me spot the enemies since i could hear exactly where they were. Some other movies such as 300 in the scene where there are 1000s of arrows flying at the soldiers you could hear them landing all around you. That was pretty cool.
When playing metal gear solid i tried using the "Video Game" mode on my Denon 2809ci. It appeared to add echo to everything, but did not acurately reflect the position on the sounds basically it just used all speakers to produce the sound. When i switched to regular 5 channels that was when i could hear if there was someone sneaking up behind me. Anyways I think i have to spend some time tweeking the system, but so far I'm pretty happy with the speakers.

Nice gift, and in High Gloss Cherry no doubt!

The Game mode on the Denon is good for ambient noise when playing party type games, I would stick with the standard DD setting for any serious gaming, as you have noticed.

Tom, when the only material in the surround channel on a particular multi-channel disc at a particular moment is ambient sound, then of course that's all that should be heard. When some specifically located sound(such as an "enemy")is mixed into the channel then that's what's heard. Enjoy your surround sound with the QS8s in either case.

Gratz on the nice gift!
I'm also not a big fan of "video Game Mode" or any of those equalization effect modes for that matter. They just never sound right for me. All hateful remarks about compression in music recording aside, I figure if a video game producer wanted an echo effect, they would have added that into the sound track. I like to hear things as they are intended.
With great power comes Awesome irresponsibility.
