Oh, it's very different from the rest of the genre. Much more historical fiction (sans the romance element) than sci-fi. Similar in some ways to what Harry Turtledove does with some of his alternate time series (namely the War of the States books, which are pure alt-history, no time travel or aliens involved).

I tried Turtledove a long time ago too, but, again, I wasn't really ready for that. Still stuck in the typical sci-fi/fantasy mindset of typical worlds and plot lines.
Recently, I read The Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher. . . sure it's a little derivative, but I ended up liking it quite a bit. I thought the characters were the shining part. That reminds me, I need to check out his Dresden Files series.

Side point:
I wish there was some way to link my Amazon.com wishlist to my Amazon.ca wishlist.

I just finished "the Prince of Thorns". Now I'm onto the second book of this series. I couldn't put the first one down. The main character is one of those hero villains you just want to hate, but find yourself liking. Very unique book.

Bump!
I've been reading a lot more of late. From a psychological perspective, I'm reading Passionate Marriage. The sex stories can seem a bit ... weird at first, but the principles seem good so far. My church has me reading as well: in the couples group, we're starting Grace by Max Lucado. It's dynamite so far. I just joined a men's group that is starting Multiply by Francis Chan. I've heard good things about it also.

I picked up "A Memory of Light" the other day. I can't believe Wheel of Time will finally be complete. Talk about a lifetime of reading.
First I have to finish Neal Peart and Kevin Anderson's "Clockwork Angels." I won't give it rave reviews but it's an interesting read if you are a fan of the Rush album of the same name. P.S. Don't do like I did and accidentally grab "Clockwork Angel" at the book store. Along with just missing an "s" it also has a steampunk theme so the cover deceived me as well. Obviously I didn't check the author's name. I read it anyways. It's categorized as teen fiction and probably good for that target audience. I understand the series is quiet popular. However, I was more glad than disappointed when I hit the last page.

I'm working my way through WoT again before I read the last book. First half of Winter's Heart is tough going, I can see why people quit the series around there. Still, I keep discovering new things and more hints to stuff in future books.
