I'll take a crack at this one too.

As far as I know, none of us board members have bought/tried/tested the new Axiom cables.

You can find a preliminary report on them here. From what they've said so far - the axiom cables look like winners. Far from inexpensive though.

Many on these boards are going to tell you to spend no more than you need to for cables. these are considered good enough by many.

I prefer to take a middle of the road approach. In all my looking, I've not found a better deal than these, for good quality cables.

It's really up to you. How much do you want to spend?

Yes, I use the bluejean cables for 1 of my s-video and my analog 5.1's. Good stuff, best prices of the 'internet companies.'

Wish they did speaker and optic. Though, better cables optic's are at a good price.

i posted the thread, blank, came back and realized it was blank about an hour later

anyways, i am looking for cheap video cables. i have a 32 inch tv. going to have basic cable, nothing fancy.

but audio cables i will spend some money. I want this system to last a while, and i only want to have to make one cable purchase(s) in my lifetime(at least for audio)

system-m22tis, QS8, HK 525, SVS 25-31PC+

other stuff-xbox, 32 inch TV, regular cable, will be connecting computer to reciever for both mp3's and DVD's.

will need appropriate cables for all of that

edit-coaxial stuff sounds pretty durable(still in college so my stuff is gonna get moved around and beat up)

Hawk, video cables are coaxial cables with 75 ohm impedance. At a maximum, there's no need for you to spend more than here or at other reasonable cost sources such as Cables America. Audio interconnects can be the same cables or even less expensive types if the heavier coaxial interference shielding and 75 ohm impedance aren't required.

Hawk, maybe you misinterpreted my reply, but to repeat, video cables are 75 ohm coaxial cables, so yes, you do get coaxial for video. Again, for audio interconnects(speaker wire is simply lampcord)the same cables can be, and often are used, but less expensive non-coaxial cables are usually perfectly satisfactory.

IMHO, Axiom's cables are overpriced. I made my own cables following these directions, but if I were going to buy cables I'd buy them from bluejeanscable.com.

I'm not in the "more expensive cable is better" camp, but I do own alot of the top of the line Audioquest cables (speaker, RCA's, Coax) that we got at work through accomodation, or winning contests. Most of the cables, and such make litle to no difference in performance or sound, but the one that did was the speaker cable. I have some cheap 12g cable from "rat shack" that I hooked up to the M60's that do them justice, but the difference was dramatic when I hooked up my AQ Mammoth, and Caldera cables to them. Better image, wider soundstage. It just had so much more depth than with the rat shack cable. However the M60's sound great with just about any wire/cable you use on them, and I tried a bunch from Monster, Tributaries, and others. I'm eager to try the Axiom Cables though. They look really well made, and IMO are super inexpensive compared to some other's (AQ, Monster). Can't wait to try them out.

so what cables would you say are more important then the rest? Speaker to reciever is important, what about the others?

also, i am going to do computer to reciever for both audio and video so i will need cables for that too

tahnks

The axiom cables look very sharp too. Or at least in my opinion they do. And I would say asthetics do have something to do with it even if most people say it doesn't.

I think it would be smart to have places sell cables in discount. In other words, I'd rather buy all my cables from one place if I knew they were all similar grade. And if I was going to drop that much $$ it'd be nice if they did X% off the top depending on order size.

But I guess we're still getting quality cables cheaper than retail so I shouldn't complain

I agree Nick, but not alot of places if any at all do that. Hawkson101- From my experience I have learned that you do not have to spend a fortune on cables in order to get good, great, or the best sound/performance from your theater. I also HAVE noticed that with some "high end" cable (which I got at a huge discount) does "improve" in certain areas of the signal being sent through it. Better imaging, bigger soundstage, more depth, but if had to pay full price for say the AQ Caldera or Mammoth I would just skip it. There are plenty of mid-price range speaker cables that "perform" better than what you can get at the Rat Shack, and the Axiom line falls in the mid-price range catagory IMO. They look well made, and have gotten a favorable review about build quality and price. In the end people will argue there is no difference, that all cables/wire are the same, and those that say otherwise. IMO there is little to no difference in performance I have heard except when it comes to speaker cable where sometimes there were notable differences.

Hey John, I know you've done it a hundred times already, but why don't you post that link over to the McIntosh guy's essays on speaker wire. I'm sure that will spark up another lively discussion.

Check the link I posted in the other cable thread. They have some choice words about cables and sound, too.

Hawk, on your last post, all the cables are equally important because without them you don't get any sound, but as long as they meet a minimal quality standard they don't affect the quality of the sound. What Mark(Big Will) was referring to is a frequently cited article by a well-respected veteran audio professional which explains the facts about speaker wire. Although we sometimes hear reports of remarkable improvements with high-priced stuff in this area, it simply isn't technically possible.

thanks
i read the article
as a noob i thought the wires like coaxial and all that stuff was what you used to connect speakers to reciever, but if you want high end dont go with the radio shack

now i know the standard is radio shack, and not the other way around

anyways, i figured it all out

except what i need to connect my sub to my reciever-can i use normal 12 grade radio shack wire for that or no?

Nope. You'll need an RCA-RCA coaxial cable-the same type you would use to connect a CD player to a receiver. (except only 1 cable instead of 2).
