I live in a house in Brooklyn. I own Thiel CS 3.6 speakers. I'd like either the m2i or m22ti bookshelf axiom speakers.
My thiels kick ass except that my tweeter is borked. It sounds excellent unless something at a certain frequency plays when you're listening at a loud volume, then it sizzles. I've listened with earplugs and an SPL meter, at 120 dB with lots of music(andre rieu - greensleeves, most modern rock) this is inaudible, and with stuff that has certain content(massive attack - danny the dog from 0:55, or the final fantasy X soundtrack's guadosalam), it sizzles at 90 dB.
[REMOVED] I had m22tis 4 years ago that I gave my father as a moving present when I got the Thiels. The best way to describe the thiels was a step forward in the same direction. Accurate, honest, and coherent, but you hear a whole new dimension from what the m22ti put out. It's what you'd expect from something that retails for 10x as much.
If you'd like to just hear them or talk shop with a CD you like(if you're shopping around for a new hi-fi), give me a shout as well.

oh. my bad.
karma got me, because 20 minutes after I posted this, the dome popped off the tweeter, and fell to the floor. the faceplate was the only thing keeping it on all along.
Is there anyway I can steer this thread around into something where someone can recommend a replacement for this 1" metal dome tweeter that's slightly less edgy that'll fit the thiel 3.6 faceplate?
My apologies again for breaking forum fules.

The best you can do is buy a replacement from Thiel. The crossover is designed for that particular tweeter so you won't find anything else that will work properly.

This is not possible. They do not offer replacements, only rebuilds as they do not stock parts for these speakers. I guess they only do that for models that cost more than $4.9K. The rebuild I got back from them last time did not sound like the tweeter in my other speaker. It was not nearly as FUBAR as it is now(the cap popped off of it last night). Reading avsforum, 2 other people had the same issue in the Thiel thread there, of getting back a tweeter that they said crackled with loud female voices. I don't envy the people burdened with the task of having to rebuild small drivers. I am thinking of getting two of these. http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=264-555 The original model number looks like a vifa one, and I believe the crossover crosses over at 1.6 KHz, which makes the 1.5 KHz response here seem like it'll work with their 1st order crossovers. Incase it is more or less sensitive, I still have a working one that I can use to match them with, I'll modify the crossover until I get something as close out of the new one as I did out of the old one. It's the same impedance and size, the best thing I can do is put them in both speakers and see how they do. It beats getting a second crackling tweeter.

I wish you luck. At least now I know I won't be buying any Thiels. Remember to come tell us how it works out.

I don't know what Thiel 3.6's cost, but 3.7's are about $13,000 a pair. Nice to know that female vocals can bork the tweeter (love that too, btw...). Seriously? Thiel won't help you with a tweeter replacement? Man, I'd be screamin' at somebody. I'd think that they would bend over backwards to support a customer base that pays those kinds of prices for speakers.

From the limited reading I did, it seems like the 3.6 had great sound, but in the current lineup, you'd want to go for the 2.4s, which, while still too rich for my blood, are certainly more affordable than the 3.7s.
But yeah, that's really a bad deal if you can't get replacement drivers.
