I've been using it on the laptop for about a week, so far so good. The only problem I've seen so far is if you click on a link which opens another window for that new page, it seem to take forever for the new window to open and page to display.

Because they eventually had to land the black helicopters.
Shouldn't you be building plant stands instead of looking through the front door peephole?

It doesn't look like they have a speil chek yet. I might just stick with FireFox.... Ha! Firefox user here. Same problem. I tried IE8 last week and was chugging along with it thinking, "hmm, this isn't so bad," when I came across the lack of the auto spell check. I hadn't even realized how often I use that in my daily postings here and in other places. I'm positive that there's an add-in spell checker somewhere for IE8, but I didn't feel bothered to go find it. I'm happily back to Firefox. Regarding Microsoft... I'm a long-time Windows user and application designer/developer. Years and years and years. I'll even defend Vista to some degree. But about a month ago my wife bought herself a Macbook Air. It pains me to admit it, but I actually really like the stupid thing. After about 5 minutes of "where's the damn control panel" ranting, I got over it and it started to make sense. So much so I've found myself looking at Macbook Pros as a possible replacement for my Dell notebook...

Mark (et al), I've been using a little IE add-on called ieSpell for years. It's free, fast, unobtrusive, spyware-free, and adware-free. There does seem to be one glitch with IE8 in that, when it comes upon a misspelled word, it fails to highlight the word in the text. So far, that hasn't bothered me too much because the misspelled word is shown in the ieSpell box. I've reported this bug and I suspect (hope) they will fix it before long.

Thanks Jack!
Part of my reason for wanting to go to a different browswer is that on this, my newest of computers, I have to close and reopen IE 3~5 times just while reading the boards here (I haven't had problems with any other sites at all).
It just frequently hangs as if it were waiting for a response from Axiom, yet if I close IE and then reopen, all is fine. I was just going to go to FireFox as I used it on my old computer and I miss the spell check, when I saw that IE had a new version....

Yes, I, occasionally, have a problem with IE and the Axiom forum. It's especially frustrating because it's intermittent. Most of the time everything works fine. But, now and then, I can't get a page to open. The little green line just slowly crawls to about half way and then it just sits there. Or, when I try to submit a post, it does the same thing. I usually have to close IE, wait a bit, and then come back to the forum. Fortunately, I've found that my post has gone through and I don't have to redo it. This is the only site with which I experience this.

I've had the same problems with the site too. Sometimes I have to close windows and come back and log in again as well as pages loading partway(usually just the Axiom header at the top) then stalling...other times, no probs. Actually, I've had similar problems with some other sites too, like Sports Illustrated and Motortrend.

IE8 actually does things a little bit differently than IE7. Here at my job, I know that our web developers were bitching about IE8 because our company's website did some strange little funky things when viewed with IE8. Perfectly fine with IE6/7, Firefox, Opera, Safari, etc, but not with IE8. I don't know the details, but I know they had to make some software changes to our site to get IE8 to render it all correctly. Perhaps the UBB.threads software that runs our Axiom forum isn't quite 100% compatible with IE8 yet either... Thanks Ajax for the tip on ieSpell. I'll keep it in mind, but I'm stickin' with Firefox. I'm used to it and it works perfectly for all of 'my' sites.

I have been complaining about the hanging on loading since I joined this forum. Going to page 2 of this thread for example it hanged and I had to close every window open on the forum and log back in. The problem seems random and happens when I open a new thread, click on a different page of a thread or the most annoying when I am submitting a post. I can tell whether it will hang or not after a few seconds and it doesn't send. In the case of submitting a post and it hangs I edit copy the post, close the the windows, log back in, edit paste then send. It can get very annoying on some days.
Ironically it hanged on loading while sending this post.

Well, yes. Particularly if it also doesn't display properly in Safari and others.

Are you saying this is a problem? I don't have issues in Firefox or Safari. Or IE7, for that matter.

No, no, just generically taking seriously CV's facetious comment. I have no problem with the Axiom forums in FF3 on Mac or PC. I don't generally use other browsers to get there.

The Axiom board is the one site I use Firefox for. I was unhappy with how it displayed certain other sites, so it didn't become my browser of choice, but it has let me sidestep most problems with this board. The exception is the weird glitch that turns a lot of posts back to unread, at which point I back up to the main forum page instead.

I think MS knew there would be a few problems with a new browser and older websites not designed specifically for it. Hence, IE 8 comes with a "compatability view."

They also have "InPrivate" browsing which helps prevent Internet Explorer from storing data about your browsing session. This includes cookies, temporary Internet files, history, and other data. Toolbars and extensions are disabled by default. See Help for more information.

Despite this being touted as a miraculous innovation, I have to point out that Safari has had porn mode private browsing for several years now.

Ok, for those that have been using IE8 and find it slow to open, open new tabs, or open new windows, this Windows Fixup website seems to have resolved my issues, and others. Now my IE 8 is blazing fast... From the site: The problem, in most cases, is the presence of IE restricted sites and enhanced security configuration zones, which are generally created automatically by spyware removal software, such as Spybot and IESpyAd. Traditionally, the presence of these entries has been hugely beneficial, offering protection against malicious software. However, Internet Explorer 8 includes new security measures that may obviate the need for these entries, and the browser can suffer a tremendous speed hit in their presence. So, here is the link, Fix IE8 SpeedBasically your installing an INF file that removes all Internet Explorer restricted sites, enhanced security configuration zones and trusted sites. I was about to go back to IE7, now I am very happy.
