Why would anyone want to buy music legally from any record label after reading this ; unbelievable!!

It's a ridiculous amount to pay, but I still have very little sympathy for him. And it seems like you answered your own question. That's EXACTLY why you want to obtain your music legally. Ha ha.

Tenenbaum testified that he had lied in pretrial depositions when he said his two sisters, friends and others may have been responsible for downloading the songs to his computer.
Under questioning from his own lawyer, Tenenbaum said he now takes responsibility for the illegal swapping.
"I used the computer. I uploaded, I downloaded music ... I did it," Tenenbaum said. I feel that for a kid, as his lawyer said, I think with this act he acted like a man.

So how did he get caught? It doesn't make sense to bust somebody on a college campus for downloading 30 songs when there is probably some kid in the dorm next to him with thousands of downloaded songs.

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2009/07/o-tenenbaum-riaa-wins-675000-or-22500-per-song.arsLooks like he used a variety of software and was warned several times before the actual court case. To put it bluntly, the guy wasn't very bright. I have known a few friends that have gotten "scary letters" in the mail after downloading something they shouldn't have. You're stupid to continue after that, at least in the same way. If you're going to participate in obtaining illegal material, do so while using more than half your brain, otherwise you are insulting your own intelligence. Kazaa, AudioGalaxy, and others are programs that are asking for trouble because of their easy access. I'd say he deserved it.

They only busted him for 30 but there may have been many more. Also targeting a low level user sends a message to other low level users that it’s not just the 10,000 song sharers getting busted. My guess they feel they lose more from very many people sharing relatively few songs than from a few people sharing lots of songs. And it follows the concept of “broken window policing” (i.e. fix things when they’re small and they never get big. I seriously doubt they selected those to target randomly. They likely had 10s of thousands to choose from and went after a cross-section of those sharing music so as to send a message to others in each targeted demographic. Probably also tried to avoid certain demographics like single working mothers or they’d face the publics wrath.
