Even Blu Ray still looks good/better than DVD in 720P. The reason for getting 1080 would be how close you are watching that TV from, the closer you are the higher resoltuion you should have.

Only thing we'll be watching is TV, 10+ feet away, since it will mostly be when sitting in bed with the TV on the other side of the room. No DVD/Blu up there.

Until you get up to 50" +, I'm not sure how much 1080P really helps over 720 anyway.

It is 720P, but for a 42" secondary TV I don't see the need to spend extra for 1080, especially since I don't expect to have more than a 720P input (cable) as a source going to it. Any Blu-Ray would still be done on the downstairs TV.

I'm also looking at this tv. Let me know how HD content looks with cable/sat. I know you said that it isn't for Blu-Ray, but if it's not too much trouble to hook it up, I would like hear your opinion.

If you were sitting closer than 10' say 6' the 1080 would allow you to notice the cleaner, crisper picture, at your distance the differences are most likely not even noticeable.

Michael, in the December Consumer Reports tests that I referred to, the 42X1 was rated "very good" in HD quality, while the 1080p 42" Panasonic was rated "excellent"(both were rated "excellent" for SD quality, relative to the standard for that material). As has been said, however, at the ordinary viewing distance involved it's unlikely that a noticeable difference would exist between the 42" 720p and 1080p with HD material.

I'm going to wait at least until Black Friday before I do anything, so I don't miss out on any holiday specials.
