I watched Sleeping Beauty last night . Looks great and they cleaned up a lot of artifacts from the soundtrack but the thing that suprised me was the special feature on the disks called Dragon Encounter. It is a 5.1/7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. I was shocked at how immersive the sound field was. It really showcases the greatness of the Axiom quadpolar surround speakers and there is plenty of low frequency energy throughout. Awesome demo scene.

The special feature called Dragon Encounter is short, it is only like 5 minutes long but it was a pleasant suprise.

For the actual movie itself don't expect jaw dropping sound, but the nasty sound artifacts from the original mix has been cleaned up quite nicely. The most noticeable improvement is the picture quality.

After catching up from my Christmas sebatical - I read this and tried it out last night. While the bass was impressive, I thought the best part was that the Fairy Godmothers sounded as if they were directly above and slightly behind my head. Neat effect.

I just ordered this BD today, as Disney announced it's headed back into the vault--prices are sure to start rising.

What is with the whole 'vault' thing down there in Disneyland anyhow? Are they doing it to create a sort of 'Members Only' feel to owning Disney movies?

"Sorry kid, you're not old enough to own 'The Lion King'... it went back in the vault before you were even born"!!!

Edit:
Looks like I posted to a bottom of the page item by Michael regarding "the Vault" before realizing there was another full page of replies.
-----------

I don't think it's so much a 'member's only feel'. What it is, is a brilliant marketing scheme designed to make people buy product now instead of later. Money in hand is almost always preferable on paper to money trickling in over time. You do it again every generation shift while rotating your product line through different vault cycles to keep the income steady and you probably have one of the best marketing schemes to come along in a long time.

Certainly, the ethics are questionable.

Disney has been doing this since VHS. I first came across it when I tried to fine 101 Dalmations for my daughters back in the 90's. Irritating but effective.

So they can release a new version every four or five years with updated fonts on the packaging and charge you $32 for it.

Just out of curiosity - has anyone seen the Blu version of Pinochinose? Is it worth snapping up before the vault closes? Any "surround candy" like the "Dragon Encounter" on Sleeping?

Don't know but I went back to see Avatar again with a friend who hadn't seen it yet. I wanted to see it one more time before it left the giant 3D screen. Not only did I experience way more visual detail the second time through but I also noticed a LOT more nicely done detail in the audio effects. The noises of the habitat, the fauna being brushed aside, even insects that were not necessarily prominent in the picture at the time.

You made me think of it with the words "Snapping up". There is a scene where a large, pterodactyl like creature is chasing them and snapping it's huge jaws at them. A couple of the bigger snaps sounded so real and so close to me that it made the hairs on my neck stand up.

I'm unsure about how good the new 3-D TV technology is going to be to do this movie justice but audio wise, I think we have the new Master and Commander in the making when this hits home theater.

You had me wondering where the Avatar review was coming from in relation to Disney and Vaults.

Ah, this is EXACTLY why I've not been able to bring myself to buy 'Beowolf'! My sister and I saw it at the iMAX in 3D when it came out, and the movie was so stunning visually in 3D than I've not had the heart to see the regular version.

Partly unrelated, but I'd really like if they put James and the Giant Peach on Blu-Ray. I'd watched the dvd from Netflix, and it's a strange widescreen matted on 4:3 format. So the thing's sitting there in four sided letter box.

So....no one has Pinochio? I am developing a Disney library against the day that I will have Grandkids - replacing the VHS as the classics come out of the closet..er..Vault.

Sorry, sticking to topics has never been my strong point online. But at least there was a connection.

Edit: And No. I do not own Pinocchio. \:\)

By the time you have grandkids, they'll laugh at your antique Blu-rays. Hold off until they release the hologram versions from their vault.

I was trying to be funny and poke fun at myself, but thanks for the lecture.

See what I did there, I made a connection using the word "and". Thanks for educating me, now I can talk about practically anything I want.

For my next derail, "Giorgia Palmas, also worth flying to Italy for, no?"

Whew, I was just about to hit 'send' on my PM to you which included many, many, MANY nude pictures of some of my exgirlfriends as a sort of 'olive branch' appology. I'll just go ahead and delete that now that I know we're cool!
