I just got the digital SPL meter from radio shack and was wondering how I use it to set the right level for my sub? I don't have a test disk (adn I don't really want to buy one), I'm just using the test tone from the reciever (HK 525)..which doesn't seem to play the test tone to the sub!? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, is there any good info on how to use the SPL meter for home theater set up? I read the manual, and a few tips here and there, but would love to get more info on what the heck I'm doing -- thanks!

Here is an instruction from SVS on how to calibrate a sub with RS SPL link. I have no idea where you can get the sub pink noise sound to test without a sound calibration disk.

One advantage of the Hsu subs is that they send you a disk with lots of test tones to make calibration easy.

I would advise getting a tune up disc. You wont regret it. I read a review that recomended "Home Theater Tune Up by Sound and Vison". I found this disc online brand new for $16.55 and it has been great for a guy who is new to all of this. It explains how to use your SPL, how to tune your TVs color, contrast, tint and so on, plus all the audio test you need. I noticed a considerable difference after I finished going through the disc plus it helped answer many questions I had. It also has several kewl THX, DTS and Dolby video clips that are great for quickly impressing everyone with your systems performance.
Regarding the sub, it explains in detail how to calibrate this most difficult part of the whole process.
Another thing I found out is on the Pirates of the Caribean video, if you go to the THX selection in the audio menu, it has all the audio and video calibration test screens and tones. The tune up disc is still better I think, especially if your new like me.

Yeah, I'll second the Home Theater Tune Up by S&V for setting up your HT.

Some of the movies with THX have a THX setup page. It does test tones to all channels -- including the sub.
It may help. Finding Nemo and the "newer" Star Wars flicks have it. Others do too.
I've not checked, but, I have heard that sometimes your public library will have these type of setup discs among the other DVD material you can check out. ???
Just some thoughts.

thanks for mentioning that one. looks like my local BestBuy has it and the $14.99 is certainly much better than the $40+ I was going to spend on the Avia disk.
