We are thinking about finishing the basement and putting in a media room (it will be about 20x14 if all goes as planned). I'll need a projector down there, and was thinking if I am going to get one, maybe I should future proof and get one that does 3D. I wanted to get some thoughts on this. I did a little looking and came across the Optoma HD66 . I'll have to look more to see which ones are good. Glasses aren't cheap either, then I need a player that can handle it, etc. I may not get all of the other parts to do 3D now, but at least knowing the projector can do it would get that part out of the way. Thoughts?

I think it's a bit too early to be aiming for future-proofing in the 3D home theater area. If I were in the market for a projector right now (which I'm not) I'd aim for the best PQ my money could buy. I'm sure the 3D ability doesn't come cheap.

I concur. If you want a 3D capable projector system, you are better to wait at least another year to get something, plus you will need a 3D capable Blu-Ray player, and the jury is still out on if you really need HDMI 1.4 cabling and and receiver (depending on your configuration)...

I may just skip that for now then. Haven't researched projectors much before though. Need to figure out what's good, important stats to look for, etc. to at least get a narrowed down list.
