I have the EP-175. I got it on sale for like $400 CDN which is a steal.

Is this a good sub? I notice more people here recommend Hsu VTF-2 as a good match for Axiom.

Forgetting about other brands, is this a decent sub? Someone asked me "how I like mine" because "at 50% it (Hsu VTF-2) starts knocking stuff off the walls"

Maybe it's just I don't know how to place/configure it, but I want to FEEL explositions without that unnatural "booming" feeling.

Well Saint, when I first ordered my system, having never owned a sib before, I decided that I wanted the sub to match all the rest of my new speakers so I ordered the EP-175. For HT, I was pleased with it's performance but for audio, well it just wasn't very "musical". By that I mean it seemed slugish in trying to keep up with the bass and midrange from the M60's. So based on lots of posts on this board, I ordered the Hsu VTF-2 and did an A/B comparison test and IMHO, the Hsu was superb for both HT and music! I returned the EP-175 for a full refund (minus the $67 US shipping cost) while it was still under the 30 day returen policy.

So would you guys classify the EP-175 as a "bone shattering bass" machine? As my friend said with the volume knob at half he's "knocking stuff off the wall".

Is the ep-175 capable of the same?

As for music, it's being moved to a HT -only purpose anyway

The Axiom subs are very worthy items.
They are more pricey than other equivalent performing brands which is often why they get knocked, but again, they are good subwoofers.

I think if you want 'boneshattering' from any sub, you really are not looking for a sub at all but rather a wrecking ball parked outside.

I've been lurking for a few weeks myself still trying to understand this also. So, is it mostly a price/performance issue? I mean is this a marketing opportunity for axiom? If they reduced the price, then would their subs be more attractive compared to another option? Or are there still some technical distinctions that would incline one to still pick the other options. Just trying to understand as a newbie.

I think it's great that this free and open exchange goes on right on their own forum, but also a bit strange I haven't seen Axiom defending, unless it's been done too many times before... Not that I want to see another sub war, I'm sure everybody's a little tired of that from other forums.

The powers that be of Axiom pretty much stay out of any thread discussions. If you hang around very long you'll realize pretty quick that this is one of the best audio boards on the web. It's not just the "Axiom" boards.

Yeah, I agree and that's great. I didn't mean a marketing/sales type of thing. I think I just meant Alan jumping in with some technical opinions. I've seen him doing that with other speakers, for example. I'm just trying to understand the technical characteristics of an axiom sub, and what it would be best for or maybe even some generic differentiators. It seems similar questions have been asked by others.

No, no, we're far too sophisticated to have wars over subs around here. We have wars over cables, break-in, solid state electronics, etc. Other than that, we're pretty darn civilized.

You really don't even have to qualify our ciivility to exclude those debates. They can often get heated, but rarely (and there have been notable exceptions) do things become uncivilized. In cases where it has gotten personal, the admin (Amie) will often mop up.

emiburke,
Many ppl own Axiom's subwoofers, there just is something of a minority on the forums i believe.
Personally we own the EP350 and we find it to be excellent. We don't use it much for music (except for the really low end of things) but of the 3 subs i've heard to date, it was the most accurate. I've recently heard it used for HT in a friend's basement when i brought it over for kicks and it truly rumbled his HT room far more than my own.
The extra plus about the Axiom sub comes with the Axiom customer service of course, as well as the finish of your choice, typically one that matches your speakers. If you have not already noticed, many other sub companies (ahem...SVS for example) still sell nothing but black, at least for their lower end units.
This was simply not acceptable for us and so Axiom sub was the only way to go. The price of some SVS and Hsu subs still hit the same price as the Axioms.
OVERALL Hsu and SVS put out great bass and SOME units come at a cheaper price...hence the flock towards these two companies over Axiom in this regard.
