I currently have the VP150. The entertainment center is 22 inches high. So I built a shelf for the TV to set on and put the VP150 in the shelf (VP150 sits on the entertainment center) which is 8 inches tall. I also put in a cross brace since the TV is 90 lbs. I have ordered the VP180 and upgraded to a 58" TV that is 150 lbs. I want to build a new shelf, but noticed the VP 180 has 3 ports. How much room is needed behind the ports? Would I need to cut holes in the cross brace for more air? Thanks.

Hi,
As for all audio speakers, the common recommendation is . . . The proximity to the rear wall is only a minor concern because of the ports. You could be within 2 inches and that would be enough room for the ports to breath. Putting any speaker close to a wall, and even more so close to a corner, will give you quite a boost in the upper bass region. It does not matter if the ports are in the front or the back or if there are no ports at all. It is one of those things you just have to try and if you seem to have an overpowering and muddy bass then you need to move the speakers away from the wall a bit.

Interesting. I should have tried the VP150 in different positions all this time. The center channel was not as clear, but I took Ian's advice and bumped the level +3 and it was much better. Now I wonder if placement had anything to do with it. I have already swapped the TV so I cannot test the VP150. Well, I will go ahead with the self building and not worry about the ports. When the VP180 arrives in a couple of weeks, I will try it in the shelf, but I will also try moving it away from the back cross brace. Maybe out in front more.
