I got caught in the middle of a storm Saturday night. My neighborhood is nothing but downed trees and debris. Most of the houses are intact, but many of them suffered major roof damage with trees falling on them. It rained so hard that my outside drain got clogged up (right outside the door to my family room) and water gushed under the door and through every crack in the concrete, so now I have mushy carpet there. I can't do anything about it yet, because I haven't had electricity since Saturday night, and it my be several days before it's back on.

I was surprised to see a couple of squirrels scurrying around this morning. Yesterday there wasn't a bird or squirrel in sight, except for some carcasses and one that could barely move.

There were piles of hail all over the place. Some about 3 foot in diameter and 6 inches high of fused together small stones.

Wow... sounds like a heck of a storm.
I've never seen (heck, never imagined) a pile of hail before... what kind of temperatures did you have ?

Temperature was probably in the upper 50 to lower 60's.
I remember, around 11:30pm hearing high winds while the house was pelted with hail. This went on for about 30 min until I fell asleep. Once asleep, I can sleep through anything. It's a wonder I didn't wake up in a field somewhere, naked, and wondering how I got there.

Insurance adjuster will be looking at my house for possible roof and water damage in a day or 2.

Training for missions to Mars?
Sorry to hear you had damage though Cat. We learn to tighten up our houses quiet a bit from the occasional blizzard rolling through in the winter. It always sucks when the storm wins and they can, no matter how well you prepare.
With great power comes Awesome irresponsibility.

Doesn't sound too different than a hurricane (ask me how I know..) Take lots of pictures and get that wet carpet and padding out before the mildew causes more damage than the water. You can claim fiduciary responsibility to protect your property from further damage if the adjuster gets their panties in a wad over you taking the carpet out (or drywall/insulation, etc.)
Also, if the damage is significant, you can look forward to your mortgage company holding the funds while you foot the bill for the repairs. They do have to release a certain portion to help you get started, but after that it's peacemeal and receipts are required.
Best of luck. Keep us informed on the progress.
