Hi all,
haven't been around for awhile. Just saw the M22 on wall. I am very intrigued, as don't have to pay for a stand and I think they would look very clean flanking my projector screen with a vp150 on wall.
Question is, are you giving up any sound quality going with the on walls vs. their free standing counterparts? The cabinet doesn't seem to have quite the depth of the free standing version.
Any comments?

PH, welcome back. Yes, the internal volume of the on-wall speaker is only about half that of the standard M22. So, the enclosure is tuned at a significantly higher bass frequency. The size of the enclosure, other factors being equal, has no effect above the bass range. Coupled with a good sub and crossed over above say 80Hz, there should be little or no overall difference in sound.

In general I agree with what John just said, however. Question is, are you giving up any sound quality going with the on walls vs. their free standing counterparts? The cabinet doesn't seem to have quite the depth of the free standing version.
IMO you do sacrifice sound quality with in walls because it limit’s how you can place the speakers both for bass response and more important for imaging. IMO a big advantage of using bookshelf speakers with a good subwoofer is that it let’s you place each type of speaker for it’s best performance. Using on/in wall speakers inherently limits you to wall mounting which has a profound effect on how the speakers perform (good or bad). IMO free standing speakers are better for tweaking or re-tasking later as you build your system, but ultimately it depends on how you plan to grow you your system.

That's just your opinion, man.
In seriousness, the other two are right. You do sacrifice midbass with the on-walls; if I had the choice, I would use the in/on walls or the bookshelf models (I own bookshelves and on-walls, but I've never directly compared the two--nor can I right now).

Hence the "IMO" part I've highlighted for you: IMO you do sacrifice sound quality with in walls because it limit’s how you can place the speakers both for bass response and more important for imaging.

Hence my first preference would still be the regular M22s with an inexpensive(like home made and practically free)set of stands.

Thanks for the responses. In terms of tweaking the placement with freestanding - sure you can. But reality is, sub aside, the speakers are going to have to be in fairly specific spots - but of course there is room for a bit of movement.
What would you crossover the free standing m22's at? also, I assume the same thing stands true with the v150 on wall? Probably not as many lows going through the center channel - so maybe not as big an issue?

Audyssey set my Freestanding M22s with a 40hz Crossover, but I overrode that with a 60hz setting.
