Especially an active speaker like a subwoofer with the amp inside.
My mom poured water into a receiver of mine when trying to water plants in a window behind the entertainment center. Sony actually repaired it under warranty (I have no idea why), but it wasn't good.

I vote against it, but you'll probably be fine if you don't water it while it is sitting on the sub and put down a towel or cloth of some kind to keep it from scratching the top of the sub.
My cat sits on my ep500 all the time... She thinks it is her massage bed.

I am not worried about the watering. We are a careful lot.
Can the EP500 handle 30 lbs on top of it, structurally? Does the enclosure itself vibrate much when playing loud bass notes? How will a mass of wet soil immediately above the woofer affect the sound?
I don't really like the idea, but if the plant gets put in the corner then my subwoofer plans become complicated. (The EP800 is unlikely to fall within the budget, Dana.)

The corner may not be the best place for the sub anyway. Do you have space in the middle of the longest wall of the room?

Hmmm. I have a space that is a pretty close approximation to "the middle of the longest wall". I guess when the time comes I will do the sub crawl.

The EP500 can handle 30 pounds, easily. The cabinet does not vibrate much at all during use. It's heavy and solid enough that the driver is the only thing vibrating. The wet soil will have little to no effect on the sound. I leave room for little because every object in the room can have an effect on the sound -- good or bad.

Personally, I think it will be fine if you're careful while watering it, and it improves the WAF towards getting the sub.

30 lbs shouldn't be a problem, I'm 200lbs and stand on top of my EP500 all the time to change light bulbs above it. Now I'd keep water away from it though, MDF and H20 ain't good bedfellows.
