Saddened to hear of the news that Major Dick Winters, whom we know from "Band of Brothers," died at the beginning of January.

A terrific soldier and an even better human being. We can NEVER repay him for his sacrifice.

It saddens me every time we lose a WWII vet, because I really do believe them to be part of the greatest generation.
Maybe it's simple Americana nostalgia or something and, as discussed in the dead music thread, it's easy to see everything from childhood as better and everything current as "worse".
But it just seems as though these people (the whole generation but Vets in particular) were willing to sacrifice, often with their lives, for the greater good. Current vets would do the same, but Americans as a whole will not any longer. It's more about "what's in it for me" than "can I help you?".
It seems that every time someone like Dick Winters passes, we move incrementally from the country I wish this was to the country it is becoming / has become.
Shouldn't I be 20 years older to feel this way?

RIP, Mr Winters, nice to hear he was such a humble man.
Mark, I recall reading an article a year or so ago, can't remember if it was Canadian or American, but they talked to a large group of students and asked them if they would die for their country(as in war) and the vast majority said "No".
Every year we lose a few more veterans, and it's up to us to remember them and perhaps more importantly, why we must remember them and what they were fighting for. Freedom is our inheritance from their sacrifices, we must always protect it.

What I have read about the man and the interviews that can be seen in BOB - Dick Winters was a true leader of men. In my opinion, true leaders are by nature humble men. What greater test of leadership than to successfully lead men into combat?
Mark, I am somewhat older than you - maybe not quite 20 years, but I couldn't agree more with your comments......Rob

I noticed he has not been around much on his website too much during the past months and thought maybe the age was starting to catch up with him. I really, really admire his bravery, leadership and heroism. RIP Major!

Not really about Winters, but a good story that you guys will probably appreciate. Tacoma, Washington is home to the only golf course in America designed for disabled veterans, American Lake Veterans Golf Course.Tacoma is my home town, and has been the location of McChord Air Force Base and Fort Lewis (now Joint Base Lewis McChord) for a very long time. I think Camp Lewis was established during WWI. At any rate, the presence of the two large bases in addition to our sublime climate and proximity to the Pacific Rim has long made our area a wondrously diverse settlement that includes many current and former military families. Pepper Roberts was a teacher of mine in High School shortly after he retired from the Navy. Good man. I've met Ken Still at several events. I'm proud and happy that this facility is in my community. Thanks to the Uncrate/Devour crew for spreading the story.

That's cool stuff Tom, I actually requested duty at Ft. Lewis on three different occasions while in the Army but was denied all three times, the Army thought I'd better be suited to Ft. Hood TX once and Ft. Polk LA twice so I just stayed put for the three years overseas at my unit in Greece.
Thanks for sharing!
