M80's.

Hi all. I finally took the plunge and ordered a pair of M80's from the outlet store. I'd been on the fence for awhile til I carted the M22's I use with my upstairs system (Onkyo Htr-510) downstairs to my big over weight HK Avr-7200.

Plugged them in and they sounded so good I just couldn't help myself. Great with music (found myself pulling about cd's i hadn't touched in years) and they blended so well with my axiom ctc-20 centre for home theatre there was no comparison with my much bigger Wharfedale sapphire 89's.

BTW, does anyone know anything about my axiom ctc-20 centre? I assume it's an older product. Picked it up off E-bay for a bargain awhile back.

Anyway now to another question. When I receive my M80's I was thinking of using my M22's as surround speakers. Does anyone think this would be overkill?

One week wait for my M-80's to ship, it feels like the clock is moving backwards, arrgh!!!

Congrats! I feel your pain. Anticipation is great and all, but waiting that long is not fun! As far as the M22s as overkill for surrounds? I could not comment. I have overkill for my ht setup at the moment as far as power possible, but the sound quality and imaging at low volumes is perfect.... I would 'guess' that if you are going to listen to a lot of DVD-A or SACD they might work really well...

Lorenzo,

I have just received on Monday my Axiom's (M60's, VP150 and M22's). I am using the M22's as surrounds as I live in a rent house and did not want to contend with having to hang the QS8's and make a number of holes in the walls to mount them. I currently have the M22 on 28" stands (actually 30" with the base) and as surrounds they work VERY well. Maybe not as "immersive" as the QS8's but they throw a wide dispersion pattern as a surround speaker. I heard sounds from the marsh, birds, scuttling noises in LOTR: TT that I had never heard before. I have only had them a couple of days and so far I am impressed. A far cry from what I had previously...

Use them as surrounds when you get your M80's and see what you think...if you don't care for them in that config, put them back where they were and order the QS8's...

I plan on getting a set of QS8's when we move into a house of our own and then I will have to have a different receiver that will allow me to use the different speaker configs for different uses (HT vs DVD-A / SACD)...or use them all in a 7.1 config...

For my mileage, I give them a thumbs up...

My .02,

Thanks for the advice guys. I will try the m22's out for aurrounds I will have to locate some stands for them.

At the moment I am using some Wharfedale atlantic 100's for surrounds and have wall mounted Wharfedale WH-2's (Bi-poles) for back effects. The Atlantic 100's are on stands that I got from IKEA but they were pretty flimsy and I had to attach them to the stands with small wood screws(ouch). I'm not real interested in making holes in my M22's.

WhatFurrer, how do your M22's stay on the stands? Are they attached or do they just sit on top, balanced somewhat precariously?

thanks,
Lorenzo

Lorenzo,

I am waiting for some Quakehold putty to attach them more sturdily to the stands.

Making sure the stands are perfectly level helps with keeping the speakers on the stands. Right now they are on the stands with small neoprene segments helping to keep them from moving around on the stands. I do not for any reason want to have to drill holes or use screws to attach them...too bad they do not come with the threaded inserts that the M60's have on the bottom of them for their feet or spikes. I am planning on filling these stands (have to concoct a way to do it first) with sand or shot or something to add weight to them and help anchor them to the floor...using spikes through carpet. They are currently positioned behind a chair and a lamp table so there is no real traffic around them. I have had them up pretty loud and the neoprene prevents them from moving. Once I get the room cleaned up, I will take some pictures and post them if you are interested in them.

Like I said, so far I am impressed with them as surrounds...

Yippee, my M80's are here. Picked them up today after a whole day wait knowing that they were going to be available today. They sound amazing. So much detail and even without my STF-2 the bass is very good, tight and well defined. I am extremely impressed. Now I just have to get some stands for my M22's to use them for surrounds.

I now have M80's for mains, Axiom ctc-20 centre (ooh I want that vp-150 bad though), M22's for surround and wharfedale wh-2 bipoles for surround backs (hopefully replace by qs-8's someday soon).

Thanks for the opinions re the m22's as surrounds and the info on the stands (WhatFurrer).

Glad I could be of assistance. I have been enjoying my M22's as surrounds the past few days home sick...Quantum Leap forward in sound quality from the Sony HTIB speaker set I was using...

Welcome to the club...
