Today I received my SVS 20-39pci sub, which is just amazing. When going through the manual, it talks about using the receivers test tones for the sub calibration. Im using a JVC receiver which does not produce any tones for the LFE channel. Other than using a Setup disk like Avia, does anyone have any good tips for calibrating the sub?

Jason,

I'd urge you to get the Avia disk. It gives you the instructions on how to calibrate the speakers includes the sub as part of that calibration. Works pretty slick. Also - big bene for getting the speakers set up nicely.

I've got a 20-39 myself and it is an amazing animal. Once I put Avia into play, everything was much better.

My favorite part of the Avia disk is the television calibrations. Most people have all the settings on their TV really out of whack.

Is there any preference to the Avia Guid to Home Theater or the Sound & Vision Home Theater Tune-Up?

That was my least favorite part. It put my TV out of whack...

Sounds like you either did it wrong, or you're used to your TV being out of whack.

What do you mean by "out of whack"?

The TV calibration part of the AVIA disk is excellent. The picture was much improved after using the disk. Although it seemed kind of silly using those little squares of plastic. But it worked!!!!

Hope this doesn't constitute a post hijacking; I was wondering where one gets the Avia or S&V test/setup discs.

I'd also be interested in hearing about preferences for or against. Unless, like receivers, all test disks are the same...and preference is given for, say, packaging, brand rep, etc. ;^)

don't forget that part of the calibration is sub positioning (as w/ all speakers).

have you done the sub crawl? Put the sub where you mainly sit and listen. Play the appropriate tones and crawl around listening for the best response. Where it sounds best is where the sub should be placed. Of course, you may have to make compromises for WAF.

shrubber - if all else fails, Amazon can help you out. Locally, you might try Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. Amazon's pricing will likely be better.

These things all have their plusses and minuses. I prefer Avia because it takes the approach of having the LFE come through your individual speakers rather than calibrating your sub separately. I am sure there is a much more technical way to explain this, but it just works easier .

Here is a link to the AVIA Guide to Home Theater with a good price.

Hope this helps as I KNOW it helps to make your system sound its best.

Thanks, gents. I'll check the usual big-box suspects. If not there (or priced usuriously) I'll go online.

The new Hsu is slated to come Wednesday. (Not much of a backorder on the STF-2 as it turns out. Yay.) I already got my trusty SPL meter from 'da Shack. I'm ready to rock.

And please, call me Roger. Or Mr. The Shrubber. ;^)

Roger,

The link I listed will probably be the best price...most B & M locations where I have found the AVIA disk are usually priced close to $50 US or more. An additional note: That link offers free shipping.

That doesn't come from the Monty Python "the shrubbery" quote does it?
