so i won't be "mean", and to keep all you peeps up to date, i just finished installing the
QS8's: they work, but the sound is not very good.

first thing tomorrow early morning, i'll redo the calibration.
just talking about speaker sensitivity, there's a difference of about 6 dB between the old ones and the new ones.

Satisfied jakewash !!!

ok, here goes now for some "déjà vu".

so far i've watched a few films with the newly installed QS8's, and some TV series and documentaries.

the sound field if much better integrated all around compared to my previous speakers (Energy 22 Ref), but i'm still not sure about the back side, i will have to listen more closely to that.

i have in high regard the mixture of direct/diffuse sound that comes out of those QS8's; when the time comes for direct sound, it's there, where it should be; and when it's time for atmosphere, ambiance, it also sounds very good and realistic.

yesterday i demoed the system to a friend who did not know what good sound is. he's got a basic 5.1 setup (HT in a box); for example, his subwoofer, which weighs about 15 lbs.
he was dubious that i could do better.

so, i played WOTW for about 30 mins.
his comments were something like this:
--wow, when the guy comes out of the car, we hear the thud of the closing door exactly where we see it happen on the screen and we hear the keys in his hand that much on the side of the door sound. amazing the separation there.
--another thing, the shaking of the whole room, and me, like a real earthquake.
--some low frequencies start at the front stage and then they travel towards the back of the room. WOW!
--sounds travel in any direction in a seamless fashion.
--sometimes it's so real that it made me queasy and nervous and holding tight on the arm rests because the images and sound were so well integrated and realistic and poignant.
etc...

then, some time later, he told me he was sold on this and eventually he's going to ask me to suggest a setup with new equipment for a real good 7.1 audio system.
his wife did not want to come; when he saw her again, he told her: you just missed something extraordinary.

these are nice comments about what i think are extraordinary speakers: M80's and QS8's, in effect the most important part of an audio system.

i also think those QS8 are much better than i had anticipated and i also think Ian did a brilliant job of engineering/design on them. they look good and sound excellent.

aside from the fact that i have yet to pay more attention to sound in the back, the only real criticism i can give is this:
WOW!!!

P.S.: sorry jakewash, still no pics for you! i make no promises, but it might come some day. :-(

Describing your friend's reaction to Axiom speakers, is much better than any photos you can supply.

I forgot to say this in my previous post;

a while after the demo was finished, i asked him if he had heard
any distortion in the sound.
he said he had not heard any, even in the loudest moments; and he would have liked to watch the whole movie.

i played it (WOTW) for about 45 mins, at Reference level.

Good call! e.e. cummings comes to mind.

It was only an observation, JB. Google the poet, e.e. cummings, then notice the "arrangement" of the lines on and across your post page, the lower cases, etc., and you may see the visual similarity to his work (and that of his successors) that Ken was astute enough to pick up on. (...astute enough upon which to pick????)

yeah, i just did that and noticed it.
had never even heard the name of this poet.
poetry is not my forte, it's more like the musical symbol "pppp";
(just don't pronounce the first 2 letters only if there's no hurry).

as regards the lower cases, that's only because i'm very lazy; like sometimes i stop blinking my eyes for a while, being energy conscious...a propaganda and fashion victim 100 %.

Happy New Year JB and all! I am glad your QS8's have settled into your system nicely. Was it simply calibration and listening time that changed your opinion from the above earlier post?

I spent most of the holidays at my in-laws who have a nice HT system that I built for them (Paradigm and SVS), but it was sooo nice to get home to my system where everything just sounded that little bit better to me. I don't know if it's because of my room or other factors, but I really do notice how much more enveloping my QS8's are than the Paradigm surrounds at my in law's.

Cheers,

Dan

just reread the next line after the one you quoted, where it's written:
"first thing tomorrow early morning, i'll redo the calibration."

my system was calibrated for other speakers; that's why the sound was not good and i had to redo the calibr.

as for the opinion i have of them, you can read my post on the preceding page.
my satisfaction for all the Axiom speakers i have is a solid "excellent".

Yes, I read all the posts and was happy to see the QS8's lived up to your M80 experiences. Good to know it was just calibration. QS8's are what 1st lead me to discover Axiom in the 1st place - I have been very pleased with my purchase too! Just wish I could find a place to add M80's. One day....
