Oh Alan. Could that question open a real can of worms.

When they put a toilet into a bathroom, between the pipe that comes up through the floor, and the bottom of the toilet where the "exhaust" comes out, they place a wax (or wax-like) ring, which is large enough (thick enough) that it is compressed by the weight of the toilet itself, thereby creating a seal and preventing very unpleasant leakage.

I will refrain from any scatological references.

Choosing to take the high road as well, I will point you back to the pictures I provided. The devices I employed were actually rubber couplings to join 2 pieces of pipe. They have a step down design that helps to assure a tight fit. They are the first audio devices I have found in the plumbing department. Reallh have little to do with toilets and such.
