I'm looking into "I've fallen and I can't get up" services for my mom.

There are a fair number of services with similar names, and I'm coming across what I believe to be "false review" sites. For instance this one: http://www.medicalalertadvice.com/index.php which I felt strongly enough about to actually report to Consumer Reports for investigation! (If you go to the Compare tab it looks like it's obviously biased towards the LifeStation system).

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience with these types of systems?

I want to help. I do. But I probably can't.

My Mom wanted one of these things. Without any kind of consult with me, she selected a service (I think it's LifeAlert). She hates the little fob things that came with it. She's never used it. In medical emergencies, she still calls me or my sister.

Our previous next door neighbor was 94 and still living alone.
There was an incident where she had fallen and was not found for almost 3 days. We felt terrible about it, since I know that our bedroom is <60' from where she must have been laying.

She recouped in rehab and came back for another year, but it could have had a different outcome.

Like with Tom's Mom, if she won't wear it around her neck or pinned to her garment 24/7, it probably will not "come in handy."

BTW, "I've fallen and I can't get up" is trademarked, Mark, so watch it, OK?

Ha! I think it would have been awesone if it had been stolen by Levitra or Cialis!

Yeah, I just had a discussion with Joyce about whether or not she'll wear it.

My mom is not compliant with her meds, with eating regularly (she's diabetic) and with us not wanting her to go up and down the stairs to the basement.

I can easily see her saying "'m not going to wear that thing around the house".

Maybe I just haven't caught that episode, but 1,000 Ways to Die (Spike TV) should have already done a segment where an old woman with one of those on a lanyard around her neck gets yanked into the Maytag. Just a thought.

My aunt has one, but she's never had an incident where she's needed the service. Instead, my uncle was the one who fell and couldn't get up!

BTW...she has the Life Alert.

When I'm feeling adventurous, I shred my work documents while wearing a necktie.

I believe the only thread here that has ever stayed on topic was the beer thread.

It's because that's hallowed ground, Bren.

Help! I've experienced a downward acceleration followed by an abrupt deceleration and I'm having difficulty returning to my previous orientation!

Peter, I think it might slide if the original subject were changed from first person to 3rd person, neuter.

Or, how's 'bout short and sweet, "Help! I'm licking Berber!"?
