Hello everyone. First post here but I've been reading these forums for a few months and it helped me much to decide on my setup.

So Far I have Yamaha RX-V1400, M60 mains and just ordered an HSU STF-1 sub today. I don't know if anyone has listened to this little sub so I decided to post here and let you know how it sounds once it arrives. I know some of you will say I should've gone with an STF-2 so if the STF-1 doesn't cut it I'll quietly get an STF-2

Hopefully QS4's and a VP100 will join the M60's soon.

I'll give a report on the STF-1

BTW, this is the first pair of good/great speakers I own. What a treat it is to listen to them! My setup is for 70% music, 30% movies but think that will change with the sub and surounds

i own a stf-1 , satisfied with it as i live in aprmt, 12x15 living room. But if your room is gonna be bigger i would really recommed a bigger sub, and since you listen to more music than movies, STF2 will b the way to go. if u can stretch a bit, vtf line is the best u can get.

Bottomline, Stf1 may make u feel wanting more.

Let me take the last reply a bit further and suggest that you call HSU (don't forget to look at SVS) and discuss room dimensions with them (which you haven't disclosed here). They will also discuss tangential space and other details to recommend a sub for you.

The worst thing you can do is guess at the right sub and end up with "almost" the right choice.. Let the experts help you.

Thanks for the advice.

Room is 16x13 with 9ft ceilings. On one of the 13' walls it opens to another room about 11x10. I'll call them up now(when they open at 9am)and discuss with them. Originally I was going to get a VTF-2 but they are out of stock and it doesn't fit where I origianlly planned on placing it.

Your points are very valid and I will consider them.

Take a look at the SVS box subs as well. The PB1-ISD could make a nice choice once all of the informaation is traded back & forth. Good news is - you can't make a mistake with either one. Axiom makes a credible product as well. Good luck with it.

BTW, I didn't just change my order before talking to one of the HSU tech guys. He recommended either an STF-2 or VTF-2 for my room size.

FWIW,

I have heard the STF-1 in Hsu's demo room....which is bigger than your room.

For its size, I was amazed. It was great for music, and for HT I thought a bigger sub was on until I was corrected.

Thanks to the respnses here, I got the larger sub mostly for insurance in the event that I move to a bigger place. My understanding is that the VTF will play music better than the STF because you can switch modes (min/max extension).

Confuscious say (or it could have been my uncle Binky) - "A man can never have too much LFE".

I don't agree. If whales start beaching themselves in your driveway -- even though the nearest ocean is hundreds of miles away -- I'd say you have too much LFE.

I am not too sure I agree with this.

If you have music or movies that plays deeper....then deeper tuning is a good thing. But if not, max output will be fine and probably have less distortion. I am not sure if one mode is more musical than the other.

I don't see how tuning the sub lower with a port blocker could possibly cause distortion. It's already generating the sound; it's just acoustically reinforced when you block the port (at least, that's my understanding).

I don't know about distortion, but the ports sort of act like mufflers in the sense that they cause back-pressure on the driver. The more total volume encompassed by the ports (in other words, the more unblocked ports you have), the less back-pressure there will be on the driver, and consequently, the more SPL (horsepower) it can produce.

The reason I mentioned total port volume above is because both the radius and length of the port matter in determining how difficult it is to move air through it.

In max output, the amp is doing less work to get the same output....so less distortion....even though it is inaudible.

Pete, I must take umbrage to your statement. Having whales beach themselves in your driveway is incredible! Oh wait-- that's just mother-in-law being winched off the flatbed for a visit. And trust me, there is nothing "Stunning" about her.

LOL!! I really lucked out in the in-law department. They love me. Just wait until they really get to know me, though....

DON'T let them get to know you! I'd be pissed off if they stopped visiting you or inviting us on interesting trips! Plus your father in law makes really good margaritas.

(says the most self-centered man in the universe. See, I just proved it!)
