I was wondering how many of you own a gun?

I went to one of the local gun stores today and looked at a few Glocks, i think sometime this week i am going to go to targetmaster's and rent a couple of guns to see which i like the best. I think that i will probably get a 9mm, not sure which brand yet though. Today i liked the feel of the large Glock the best, it was the correct size for my hand.

I have a few handguns, Alex. If you're definitely going with an automatic, Glock has to rank at the top of the list for reliability, although in that aspect revolvers still have the edge. By "large Glock" I assume that you're referring to the 17, and that would be a fine choice if concealed carry wasn't a primary consideration. At the range you might also try a Glock or other in .40 S&W, which has a bit of an edge for self-defense use.

How about a Browning .22 pistol for target shooting?

Thanks John,

I plan on trying the feel of several different pieces prior to shooting anything. I am not sure as to the model number of the "large" Glock...

Concealed and carry isn't a concern, i am not sure if i will ever get that permit... Self-defense is also not a primary concern..

I was really surprised at how inexpensive handguns are. I always had the perception that they were quite expensive. The last time i shot a handgun was in bootcamp in 2003, and i really don't know much about them. So, i will have to get educated as to which piece would be best for me.

An episode today of Son's of Guns had a Glock 12 full auto handgun. However, i think that would be a bit much for me.

I think targetmasters said that a box of 50 9mm rounds was around 25$? Granted, they only let you use their amo, as this is a revenue source for them. Even at 25$ a box, thats not too much $$.. So, i don't know the cost difference of ammo would be enough to justify the cost of another gun? Again, this is something new to me... I do have several prior military buddies who are BIG into guns... So, in the future i will probably be buggig them as well grin .

A small arsenal and a permit to carry.

My carry piece is a Sig 229 SAS in .40 S&W. I didn't like the Glock trigger.

I'm also looking at a Ruger LCP for the back pocket.

If self-defense isn't a primary concern, why is a relatively big 9mm being considered? If it's fun with target practice, a .22 auto, as Chris mentioned, would seem to be appropriate.

Here's one man's view of the choices.

I think i would just like to get something a bit bigger than a 22..

John, according to your link that author likes the Sig Sauer the most, even though it is not the highest value... I will ask if targetmaster carries that brand, or has any to rent.

I will keep my mind open to a 22, as for selfdefense i think any hand gun will act as a pretty good persuasion device.

Sure, Targetmasters has a fine selection of rental guns .

As to the Sig, of course that's one man's viewpoint. Note that Doc lists ammo recommendations here and in the next post has some different ideas about Sigs and others.

Also give the CZ 75B a try. It's a very well regarded 9mm and is as reliable as can be. If I were you I would give a good .22 a serious look. It's a great learning tool and for just plain fun they're hard to beat. Cheap to shoot too.

.22 ammo can't be beat for the price. Another nice thing about having a. 22 is that if others are interested in learning to shoot, it's much easier for a newbie (especially women) to initially feel comfortable starting with a 22. Personally, I wouldn't feel at all comfortable relying on a .22 for self defense. If you're ever in a situation where you would need to protect yourself, a. 22 just doesn't have the stopping power of a larger caliber.

I currently have a .357 for home and a. 38 snubnose for carry, though I don't carry much at all anymore. NH has easy carry laws so I've had a concealed-carry permit for the 20 years I've lived here, though that was pretty much for driving home from a wedding at 2am with $50k worth of equipment in my marked van.

I had a compact S&W 9mm that I loved in many respects. It was a compact model with pre-ban magazines (13 in the magazine + 1 in the chamber) and it fit my hand perfectly) I had one jam at a range that spooked me though, and without having the time to practice at the range like I used to, I decided that if my life were to ever depend on it, it was better to have 5-6 reliable shots from a revolver than to possibly have a jam in a pistol. I'm still not sure I don't regret selling it though.

You really have to make a determination if you want something for the range, something for carrying, something for home protection, etc. Though there is absolutely some crossover there, I've certainly learned to understand why many gun owners own more than one; sometimes, one gun just doesn't fill multiple roles or needs.

No offense meant to anyone of course, but i find this casual conversation about guns rather disturbing.
I've heard more serious and concerned talk from old ladies discussing plants at the garden store.

An interesting article for thought (and no, i won't be returning to this thread).

This is the last thing i will say in this thread. For americans guns are a fact of life ,but not so for canadians. This is after all a speaker forum and i think the questions and talk in this thread would be better suited to a gun forum. I would not go to a smith and wesson forum and ask about camera's.

So, should everything that ISN'T HT-related get deleted, or only what YOU find "disturbing"?

If we delete non-HT stuff, 50% of this whole forums' posts would be deleted.

Socketman,

If you don't want to read about things not related to home audio, why are you in the Water Cooler area? For that matter, why did you click on a thread named "Gun owners"?

Yes, those retarded Americans, clinging to their guns, bibles and religion.

A free people must have the right to bear arms or their freedom is at the sufferance of a government with a monopoly on armed force.

Richard,

The whole point of me asking this group of people my question is, i did not want to get replies from gun fanatics, ect i wanted a more educated open minded opinion on the matter.. I think it would be safe to say that the majority of the regularly contributing members on this form are pretty level headed people for the most part. This is why i asked my question to this group of people...

I view a gun as just a piece of machinery for lack of a better description. It is several parts of steel machined into a tool. Granted this tool can harm living things. But, so can a chain saw.. That is also just a tool, used to cut down living trees... Now, some would say you can not make the comparison between a human or an animal and a tree.. But, factually speaking, they are all living organisms... This is my personal point of view...

Also, to put my view in perspective. When i was in the military, i was one of many guys that operated one of the most deadly weapons ever constructed... infinitely more deadly than any type of hand gun, but we operated in a safe manner....

That is all that i feel like saying to address the previous posts...

Also,
I did put this thread in the water cooler, and not the home theater section. So, i should get credit for that.. smile

Today i went to a range and shot the Sig p226, as well as a springfield XD-9.

I liked the sig better, but had better grouping with the springfield... I do not think i would like a glock due to the way

I did not intend on offending anyone, like i said earlier in this post, i figured this would be the best place for an educated unbiased opinion. There are so many people into so many different things here, that this is probably one of the best places for any kind of knowledge in all honestly.

Being Canadian myself IMO find the Canadian bashing American thing in regards to guns to be nothing more than self-righteousness.

We have just as many twisted people with guns in Canada. Not to mention ice picks. Quite a few Canadians with guns killing innocent people has been a common news story JUST in the city of Toronto as of late. To think Canadians are immune to sick and evil people with guns is highly flawed.

The XD is a very good choice. I have a XD subcompact that groups better for me than any other compact I have shot. I guess I have put at least 2K rounds through it with no malfunctions what so ever. It doesn't care what kind of ammo you use.

... the way it ???

The group size may have a lot to do with the trigger feel. XD's are nice - can't go wrong there. Both the XD and 226 are a tad big in my hands - that's why I went with the 229. My Dad has a Kimber 1911-framed 9mm. Sweet when it operates correctly, but jams frequently (stove pipe) - regardless of ammo - so he's not happy with it. An armorer wants $400-500 to smooth it out. When you pay $1200 for a custom gun, it shouldn't need extra work. Never had a problem with my Sig - other than the price I paid; post-election paranoia raised prices by a good 20%.

Would you believe i spent 15 minutes composing that reply!!...

And I left that sentence incomplete!!.....

I don't want a glock due to the way the barel release mechanism works, I can tell i would not like dealing with the small tabs that they use....

While the XD did have a closer grouping, i had a little trouble getting the first round off after a reload a couple times.. This could be due to my own ignorance, i'm not sure.. The other disadvantage of the XD was the rear safety.. I did not like how if you did not grip it quite tight enough it would not fire... The P226 did not have this issue, due to not having a safety. I liked the XD's trigger better than the Sig's though.

The XD and the 226 were actually a little too small for my hand, the large Glock that i previously referenced has been the gun that has felt the best so far.

I thought the same thing, Peter.

Actually, now that I think about it, it's clearly a statement supporting revolutionary people and groups like The Black Panther Party who rightly carried weapons because their existence was threatened by racist pigs and a racist government.

And nobody NEEDS a RIGHT to bear arms in case their government runs amok LOL!

Cam, some people might interpret your comment as belittling the fundamental individual liberties upon which our nation was founded and has flourished for the last 200+ years. Personally, I would hesitate to restate any premise of the Canadian Constitution and end my commentary with "LOL". I wasn't commenting on your constitution or country whatsoever. I was EXCLUSIVELY talking about a FREE NATION, which is what was CLEARLY stated; there's more than one free nation in this world the last time I checked.

I specifically laughed because nobody in ANY country needs a right to take up arms against their rogue state.

See, he said "a free people", not the American people.

Cam, Perhaps I misunderstood your message or your intention.

It did not seem to me that your response had any intent other than to incite political discord.

Dakkon asked a reasonable question of his friends who might be in a position to advise him. You obviously have nothing to offer HIM, and apparently have nothing nice to say, which means you're basically just trolling.

We are not obligated to participate in every argument to which we are invited.

Trolling? You can call it that even though it's a giant stretch.

No, I didn't have anything to offer him, but neither did these people BEFORE me -

An interesting article for thought (and no, i won't be returning to this thread).

So you actually think an armed American populace has any chance whatsoever against our military?

You're electing me as the troll when the above comments preceded mine? They all fit into your definition as a troll, so why didn't you call them out?

I also don't know what you're talking about when you say I have nothing nice to say. If you're referring to "you *guys* don't have me this time. Ain't it ironic that people suddenly show up to try to discredit me even more. That's new." Well, I only speak the truth, and sometimes the truth hurts.

Cam, you probably shouldn't own a firearm.
