I have two potential room setups. I have some furniture on the way. This is where the WAF comes in. We have a couch on the way. Sure it'll be in the sweet spot...but will it be totally sweet? Another piece of funiture comes along with this. Currently a loveseat. We have the option to change it out for a chair. Now the two problems I have with the loveseat is. 1) It can't be turned to watch tv. Sure you can turn your head...but that's not as comfortable after 2 hours. 2) It's potentially will be blocking my right channel speaker!!! This is the more concerning of the two. The chair would eliminate both these problems. The problem is the Wife likes the extra seat that the loveseat brings and she likes how the couches are more set up for talking. TALKING?! No one should be talking during the movie So anyway. The loveseats end would be approximately 6 feet in front of the speaker (in a 15 ft. wide room) and the main couch seating will be 12-13 feet back. Will I lose my soundstage, or even a good portion of it (even if I can see the whole tower (M60) fronts? This will be with VP150 in center, M60s front, QS8s surround, M2s rear. Suggestions? Help!

I suppose a good follow up question would be...would I lose my seperation of sound if I narrowed the distance between the two speakers (M60s) to say 6-7 feet if I'd be sitting back 12-13 feet? Thanks guys for all your help on this one!

God, I want so desperately to help you. But it is hopeless.

I am a proponent of the "happy wife - happy life" philosophy. If you force her from the loveseat to the chair, the first time (and every other time) that seating arrangement strikes her as inconvenient, you lose.

So, you either have to get her to *really* like the idea of the chair, or you have to get the loveseat and tinker with speaker placement.

If it was me, I'd get TWO sofas and put them at a 45 degree angle to each other so that everybody has to turn their head!

Okay, less glibly, you won't know until you get everything set up. And my hypothesis based on my experience is that closing the distance between the mains will still result in a delightful experience.

Let us know how it goes.

Well, seeing as I find selling the wife out of the question I'll just have to go with my other options Thanks.

We are going to get into some big time trouble if you keep that up.

You guys are killing me!!

The obvious answer - I am only a husband. "Husband", by the way, is an old Celtic word that loosely translates to "a drone who is controlled by a spouse and whose sole functions are to go to work to make money to buy things, fix them when they break and have little unsupervised fun until they die first and early."

A dark, humorless people the ancient Celts. Gotta go, there are floors to be swept and dishes to be washed.

Man am I glad that's not the real etymology of husband. It's actually from the Norse for "master of a house."

Also, here's the verb form of husband according to Websters:

"To direct and manage with frugality; to use or employ to good purpose and the best advantage; to spend, apply, or use, with economy."

It would seem to suggest that it is the husband's job to improve "the cave" with purchases such as new Axioms. After all they are a (comparatively) economic purchase intended to bring about the "best advantage." Maybe that's the best approach when questioned by the wife....tell her to look up the word "husband" in the dictionary while you go buy stuff...

Something tells me you might come home to find the locks have been changed.

Ray,

That explains a lot. So did your spouse order you to get into HT?

Tom,

Is your avatar any indication of WHY that philosophy works?

Michael - I proposed to my wife at the site of our first date: a brewery. She can discern Cascade hops from german/noble hops easily. She tolerates me with good grace and good humor. I am immensely blessed to share my life with a smart, funny, beautiful woman. Who likes some Belgian and most German beer. And digs sitting on the couch in front of the "big a** TV" listening to our Axioms.

Plus, Ray wouldn't sell me his.

Pete, my wife THINKS she forced me into HT. I love it when a plan comes together.

OK Tom, after reading your post, here's the deal. I would like to know thepurchase price for YOUR wife. At least the price of a cell for cloning purposes. If neither of those options are acceptable, am I too old for you to consider adopting me? The good news is that you won't need to pay for college.

Ray3,

The going price for an ovum taken from an educated woman these days is well into the tens of thousands...

Alright Micheal, stop right there. I seem to remember getting blamed for that last round of chauvinism! speaking of the wife... mine is out of town next week, and I'm expecting an unauthorized delivery of another set of QS8s... hehehe. 7.1 here I come!!! I believe in the "ask for forgiveness theory" over the "ask for permission" can't wait to see the look on her face when she see two more of those puppies up on the wall! priceless. "sleep on the coach" no problem -- as long as its in the theatre.

QS8s? Why not M2s? Direct radiators are preferable for rear duty in a 7.1 system.

Haha... Yeah, I did you use as a scapegoat, didn't I?

I've used that "it's better to beg forgiveness than it is to ask permission" philosophy all my life. It only backfired once.

The unauthorized delivery of the QS8s certify your status as one grade "A" hobbit in my book.
