Cat, you might consider the Samsung PN51D7000. Cnet had this to say about it. "Earlier this year we called Samsung's most expensive plasma TV, the PND8000 series, the "Best overall TV of 2011 (so far)." Now that we've tested its less expensive brother, the PND7000 series reviewed here, that designation isn't as certain. Sure the PND8000 has a few extra features, chiefly a QWERTY keyboard remote and Web browser, but the two have basically the same picture quality: outstanding, second among this year's TVs only to Panasonic's much more expensive TC-PVT30 series, and better overall than the Panasonic GT30 and ST30 models. If you're in the market for a high-performance plasma TV and want the best blend of picture quality and value, the Samsung PND7000 is our new go-to recommendation." Full review hereIf the few extra bells and whistles, or the space age design, of the PN51D8000 model interest you, you can check out Cnet's review here.

Thanks for the Samsung mention. I haven't really looked at them much. One thing I've noticed, is the 8000 has optical audio out and the 7000 doesn't. I'm currently using optical audio from the TV. I'm not sure how the 7000 gets sound to the receiver.
The 7000 is 15mil and the 8000 is 25mil dynamic range.
Not sure if there are any other visual differences and if the 25mil vs 15mil makes any difference. Reviews on both say in high contrast modes, that you loose shadow detail.
It also looks like for the 2012 models, the smallest screen size they'll have here is the 59 inch models.

I haven't looked but I would guess they both are HDMI1.4 compliant and as such the HDMI cable could carry the audio back to the receiver on the Audio Return Channel (A.R.C), providing you are using a 1.4 compliant HDMI cable and the avr is also 1.4 compliant.

I checked with Best Buy and they don't carry the Samsung Plasmas that I've been looking at lately. I guess about the only way to get one of these tv's that are being phased out is to order one from Amazon when one shows up on it. But, I'm hesitant to do that, in case I get a bad one.
It's going to be a couple of weeks before I have the money anyway, probably. If I wait for the 2012 models, then I'll also have to wait for a decent sale. Looks like I may have to wait until October, or something before a one at a decent price comes along.
That is IF there is one that will fit on my wall by then. Seems that they are only shipping the big ones to USA now. Have to live in Europe to get a 50 inch.

I fall asleep a lot while watching a movie. I keep reading in reviews that plasmas still have a burn-in problem. I'm wondering if maybe I shouldn't be getting a plasma, because when I fall asleep, it sometimes gets stuck for hours on the same thing. Sometimes it's the movie menu, other times it's the menu on the blu-ray player.

Brian, most TV's have burn in protection options to prevent scenarios like you describe - plus so do most devices you connect to your TV like the amp, PS3, BRD player etc.... Keep in mind there is a difference from a temporary image retention that can be easily and fully reversed versus permanent burn in. Temporary retention may still happen, but permanent burn in is much harder to cause with today's TV's. My 3 year old Panny plasma automatically shuts off if not interacted with in 4 hours or so. IMO burn in susceptibility is not a factor I would consider anymore in my decision to go for plasma or LCD, LED etc...

There's always the simple sleep timer... but I'd have to remember to set it. Movies also run from 90 minutes to 4 hours long.
