I may convince myself I need to upgrade some of my electronics, so....

having a look at some of the sales on the newer receivers over the holidays and have come across a Denon X4000 for $898 CA(possibly less if another store will beat their price). Anyone own this receiver or heard any good/bad about it? my experience with Denon has been very good, except of course for their manuals. I haven't seen the Onkyo 929 on any kind of comparable deal, but that might be another consideration...others?
I have read that Onkyo had some hdmi problems over the last couple of years. Have these issues been resolved with the newer models?

I just recently acquired the Denon X4000 and love it. I needed to replace my old Pioneer VSX919 due to not having pre-outs and having just purchased a dedicated Parasound amplifier. Keeping in mind the Denon is about $1000 more than the Pioneer was when new, the Denon is in an entirely different league. With Audyssey Multi EQ XT32 and sub EQ HT my Axioms sound nothing short of amazing, producing sounds I've never heard from them before (granted a lot of that is probably from the amp also).

The setup is very simple and quick to make with Audyssey. It has so many features on it with the networking options and number of zones and inputs I can't conceive why or how you could possibly need more in an AVR. When researching on a new AVR I found that Denon is a bit more regarded in build quality than Onkyo, with more than a few complaints out there regarding malfunctions in Onkyo (though I’m sure many here have and love them with zero issues).

Adrian, although a slightly better deal on the X4000 might be available in the U.S., that looks like a very good Canadian price. The key factor differentiating receivers these days is the Room EQ provision, and as CW comments, the X4000 has the top XT32 version of Audyssey MultEQ. I'd have a similar view of a similarly equipped Onkyo model if you could still find for example the 818 or 929 at a good price.

I got mine from ebay for $920 American where big name retailers are selling it for $1300. Not sure if that affects the Denon warranty though if it doesn't come from an authorized retailer. To me the $380 would be worth it.

For U.S. buyers of the X4000, I'd suggest the factory refurbished unit(which should be, if anything even more trouble-free)for about $850 shipped from Accessories4less .

I would always wonder why it was sent back to then be considered refurbished though the whole time I owned it. If I'm going to shell out ~$1K for equipment I'd rather just get something brand new unless the savings is really significant.

My view(confirmed by personal experience)is that if a problem is to develop it usually does so fairly quickly. Once corrected and given a careful factory check it's less likely to develop another problem.
